Jay Michaels - WFAS-FM out

Allan Sniffen at NYRMB.com reports that Jay Michaels, long time morning guy at WFAS-FM was let go today after his shift.

Wow- just gloss over the fact that a 20-year veteran jock was shown the door, given the boot so Dickey keeps another buck in his pocket to ask about a transmitter move. Classy, really freaking classy. I realize we are all accustomed to this happening, but try to at least have a little feeling in the thread.

To those who might not know- Jay, is a consummate professional and made others better by being around him. Radio is better with more Jay Michaels' not fewer. The point is that yet another solid professional has been booted out of the business, and the pool is yet smaller.

Who gives a flip about the transmitter move to the Bronx? The money Cumulus wasted on constructing that thing and having it sit idle for 6 years could have been spent on people who would have given a rats behind about their radio station and made them money.

TowerClimber31, your point is well taken but I don't know Jay Michaels and I've never heard him on the air so it wasn't my place to comment on his situation or legacy. Of course it's an open forum here so I'm sure others, like yourself, will have good things to say about him. It sounds like Jay's a great broadcaster so I hope he got a good settlement and is not out of work for long.

That said, the news comes as no surprise to most people here who have been expecting WFAS to blow up its format when it moves toward NYC. I doubt it blindsided Jay either as I'm sure the staff must be well aware of the rumors. This seems like the first shoe to drop, hence the question of what's next.

No question that Jay *WAS* WFAS-FM.
I truly hope he lands on his feet.

Having said that, it's been no secret that Cumulus has had something planned for WFAS-FM for a long time.
It's unfortunate that Jay won't be a part of it, especially considering all that he gave to that station.

Doubt Jay would be versatile that he'd be the morning man at "103.9 WRXP". Then again, "CD 101.9" veteran Paul Cavalconte transitioned to the original WRXP quite well...

All that said, my best to Mr. Michaels.

I'm trying to decide if this is a cheap pitch for Paul Cavalconte or just another ridiculous pitch to put total "white boy" radio in a totally "non-white boy neighborhood.

Putting a 3,000 watt signal in the middle of an area there will be no one listening to "RXP" music makes a ton of sense. It may not even drown out the 103.9 pirate in Mott Haven.

Cavalconte just might be the only listening if Cumulus does this. Hopefully the signal will reach Morris Park.

Another sign of the inevitable... WFAS PD Robby Bridges' last day is tomorrow. He's headed back to Bridgeport to take over PD/mornings at WEBE 108... you know, whatever they let PDs do at Cumulus stations these days... answer phones? Receive e-mailed mandates from Lew Dickey?

WFAS FM is using on-air from time to time the slogan, "For Today's Woman."
Couldn't that needlessly make male listeners feel unwelcome?

I heard that a couple of days ago and thought it was strange.
On the other hand, I guess there's no harm in trying to differentiate yourself from the 15 other similarly formatted signals going after the same demo.

It seems clear from the current programming that major changes are coming to WFAS FM. With Jay Michaels gone, Jolana Smith slid from middays to mornings. The syndicated John Tesh show was moved into her timeslot. Hartman remains on afternoon drive. This is followed by 11 hours of automation. So there are now only 2 live and local personalities on the air during weekdays. The station is a mere shell of what it once was.
So Cumulusmay not care much at this point whether the silly slogan "For Today's Woman" helps WFAS FM's ratings.
Perhaps their slogan should be, "We will rock you" ;).

Didn't 102.7 Blink-FM try "Music Women Love" before flipping to Christmas Music (which later became Mix 102.7).

My guess is Cumulus is now waiting on the upgrade of 94.3 W232AL before moving/flipping 103.9 but with so many delays who knows.

The W232AL translator in Pomona (Putnam County) should have nothing to do with WFAS FM. Cumulus has stated that it plans to use it to retransmit WPLJ (probably its HD2).
Only a small sliver of Westchester County is expected to be within range of the translator's directional signal, even after it is upgraded to 150 watts. So it certainly could not be a replacement for WFAS.

New WFAS website (kidding): http://www.1039rxp.com/

Yes, but that doesn't stop Cumulus from putting a new format on 103.9, 94.3 & WPLJ-H2....With 103.9 moving south it will lose coverage in Rockland were 94.3's transmitter and primary coverage will be (Pomona is in Rockland County)....Since 103.9 will not be able to directly feed 94.3 it would use WPLJ-HD2 to transmit the format onto 103.9....Plus W232AL is going suffer to the south because of WJLK & WWSK so 94.3/103.9 together would link up quite nicely.
