JAY SEVERIN IS BACK TO HIS RACIST "AXE THE GOVERNOR" SLUR !

Taught "speech" and a misplaced dipthong is caused by incorrectly extending the vowel sound so that it becomes distorted and places incorrect emphasis on the accompanying consonant.

If you want to hear real racists, tune in Dennis and Callahan. They actually implied that O.J. may have killed Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman. This, of course, was refuted by their two most progressive, open minded callers, Germain and Everett.

These two individuals seem to suffer from the same "displaced diphthong" which you've mentioned several times. It's been a while, but I do have a minor in English and I don't recall ever hearing this term before. Could you explain this term's meaning to those of us who are not familiar with it? I've looked it up in several old textbooks and have found no mention of it. It must be a recent afflicition.

Who cares?

Obviously Casablanca has some sort of vendetta against the talk stations in Boston. I said it once and I'll say it again. Casablanca if you don't like the talk stations in Boston contact Jeff Kline at WAZN about LMAing the station. I'm sure we'd all love to hear the talk station you'd run.

Meanwhile my uncle, who lives in a suburb of Agawam calls the current governor of Massachusetts the worst governor in recent history and it has nothing to do with race.

Who cares what your uncle in Agawam thinks about Governor Patrick or anyone else for that matter.

This is a radio discussion board and we are discussing how a particular radio talk show host - namely Jay Severin, nee, Severino, frames his discussion of the Governor's policies to include allusions to the fact that Deval Patrick is an African- American.

BTW since when is speaking the truth seen as a vendetta?

Maybe, as Jack Nicholson once said...'you can't handle the truth.'

Casa's right about the governor's speech. I saw Deval at an event earlier today and he spoke eloquently. Perfect English.

I don't agree with much of what Jerry Williams' former producer says these days, and I might even be contradicting an earlier post of mine, but the Axe the Gov thing is so far off base that I can see how someone would think Severino sounds racist when he says it.

I don't think he is racist; I haven't heard enough of him to make that call. But I have heard his Axe the Gov remark, and while you can criticize Patrick on policy, like trying to pay for road repairs on the backs of gamblers, you cannot say he sounds anything other than refined.

He agrees with Severin that Patrick's pronunciation is atrocious? ;)

Precisely my point. (it was meant to be sarcastic.)

In any case, every time Severinor does this tired schtick, it simply reminds everyone that Patrick speaks better than most people in the state, something that he is either oblivious to, or hopes that it will inspire his bubba audience to even more foaming at the mouth outrage (how dare a black man speak better than me. than I. than... oh #$%^&&%$!!!!!)

;D

Patrick talks like his underwear is 3 sizes to small. Even if you think Severin is a racist, is it against the FCC to say anything racist?

Mule

If you have a weak argument against the governor the cheap shot is to go the racist route.

Labeling people as "racist" when you don't agree with them is cheaper still. Also far more dangerous to society.

Simply put, when Jay Severin reaches for racial stereotypes - eg. "AXE" - he lives or die by the axe. By his words you will know him.

Good point. It's somewhat like folks who, when they have a problem with the views of some talk host, rather than highlighting those views and explaining why they are wrong, just throw the all-purpose race card on the table and think it trumps everything, including the need to construct a rational argument.

Who are these folks? Well, as a poster recently commented, "By his words you will know him."

Thanks for the timely reminder.

Your self anaylsis and confession is encouraging. ;)

Pretty lame response. At the least I would have expected you to invent another Mencken quote. Disappointing.

I think it's about time for Jane Grant to post another plea for your supporters to come to your aid. I know it's about time for me to go play golf with my brother.

Sayonara on this one.

Just heard that racist, Jay Severin on 96.9 say he can't wait to respond to Governor Deval Patrick's appearance on 96.9 tomorrow on Egan and Braude which Racist Jay calls "AXE the Governor".

Time to "Imus" Severin.

If Jay is a "Racist", why do you listen to him??? I wouldn't. But I do listen to Jay daily.

If the management of 969 or its owners really thought Severino was racist, they'd have him tone it down, or send him packing.
They don't want to deal with fines any more than other broadcasters, no matter the publicity.
He pushes the envelope, but that's what talk show hosts do.
I would think Jerry Wiliams' former producer would know that talk radio is more than an afternoon tea with the blue hair crowd in the local library.

Just wondering, why do people need to make a point that Jay Severins real name is Jimmy Severino??? Jerry Williams' name was Gerald Jacoby....what difference does it make?

So I assume "Casablanca" worked for Gerald???? I'm the new guy here....I miss Larry Glick AND Imus In The Morning. ;)

For the record, Jerry never hid the fact that he changed his name as Severin does nor did Jerry hide the fact that he had three daughters.
When Jerry started out having an "ethnic" name ....read that a Jewish sounding name limited your options and so Gerald Jacoby became Jerry Williams - legally.
Hopefully, times have changed having an Italian name in broadcasting is not a deficit. The country may even have its first Italian-American President. Rudy didn't change his name to Rudy Guilian did he. So, what is James Severino's reason. BTW I am in Jay and Rudy's tribe and would not and didn't change my surname which goes back to ancient Rome and has more heritage than anyone who came over on the Mayflower.

Not so sure that's true, Casa. But not for the ethnicity. Simply for the amount of syllables it takes to say it. Seems dumb, but people get irritated for some pretty dumb things.

As far as "AXE" is concerned, I have been known in casual conversation to drop it, just to be catchy. Well maybe not just because it's catchy... it could be because at one point I was so frustrated that it seemed impossible for folks to say it right, that I just started to join the crowd and say it wrong to make it less noticeable for those who always do. Incidentally, I happen to know more than one white folk to use "Axe" instead of ask, and I find it very hard to consider it racist. On the flip side, to pin it on one particular race might in fact be a negative stereotype in itself.
