Jay Severin Suspended/Fired?

Whoa, and the story is broken by the moribund newspaper located right next to Greater! No word yet in
the other paper (don't tell me, Eye'll Think Of The Name) though I put a comment in under the puff piece
about the new "Prime Motors Sunday Night Car Talk Show".

Jeff Katz got in trouble, IIRC, for something similar. When he came to WRKO to do a nightly show he said
he was fired in Sacramento (I think) for joking about Taco Bell giving out prizes to people who run over
illegals.

Best and brightest, who's on for Jay today? I have Howie on right now.

Someone on Free Republic mentioned they'd heard it: he had referred to them as "criminaliens" and said hospital emergency rooms were "condos for Mexicans.”
As someone on that thread pointed out, the govt can't censor your speech but your boss sure can. If you get hired as a WalMart greeter and tell each customer to go f-- themselves, you can be fired.

WTKK's website is still promoting a Severin contest.

From Monday (still available via WTKK podcast)

Severin: "I suppose it's mayhem at a hospital every day now."

Caller (an RN): "I'm just grateful that I don't work in the emergency room."

Severin: "Yeah, well that's become essentially, uh, condos for Mexicans."

I thought truth was the ultimate defense?

He's just preaching to his congregation. They expect it, because they've heard it for so long. But the problems arrive when organizations see this stuff in writing via transcripts.

Depending on the intensity of complaint(s), I have the feeling this could be a tough one to survive if there were an Abe Foxman-like effort behind it.

Someone on SaveWRKO mentioned that the complaint came via a Hispanic paper in NYC--and they wondered
if Imus' fingerprints are on it! (Perhaps someone alerted Imus' people, who... etc. Hmm. Who knows.)

Curtis "Raspberry Beret" Sliwa filled in yesterday.

Wikipedia now shows the fact that he was suspended. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Severin

As for the term "crimalien," it appears that commentator Frosty Wooldridge has picked up the term as well. (Frequent guest on KOA, Denver) http://zebsrebs.blogspot.com/2009/04/incredible-corruption-surrounding.html

Severin is not the only commentator blaming Mexican immigrants for the spread of the flu. Boortz, Beck and Savage have also done so:

One day suspension.

One week and one day later, "Curis Sliwa in for Jay", again.

"Curtis Sliwa" again, implies no resolution.

"In for" implies not fired. . . yet.

Website still in suspended animation.

fired because he insulted Mexicans
If he were to be fired, it would be because people who don't like him insulting Mexicans--or others for that matter-- have contacted sponsors about it. The station is indifferent to him insulting Mexicans or anybody else.

Today's Taylor-on-radio-info.com newsletter (free via email subscription) says that yesterday Greater
Media plugged in Drew Lane formerly of Detroit's WRIF-FM to fill in for Jay, after several days of Curtis Sliwa
(Lane got to use Greater's studios in Ferndale). A try-out? Who knows; Jay's been off for a couple weeks now
and Taylor says "He’s still suspended, his agent’s still hopeful of getting him back on the air soon – and nothing’s apparently changing. You get the sense that Greater Media just doesn’t want Severin any more."

from today's Herald

This message appears right at the top of the WTKK webpage:

WTKK and Greater Media value an open and vigorous dialogue, but we also adhere to basic principles of civility, common decency and respect for all cultures. We believe Jay's suspension is the best way to uphold both of these corporate policies. WTKK Management met with Jay Severin and his agent today. He will remain on suspension until further notice.
