Jay Thomas dead at 69

Thomas was best known for shows on Murphy Brown and Cheers.

Not to mention his many years as a top rated DJ at Power 106 in LA.

Seems to me he kept his radio job while doing the TV work.

This little fact was listed on one of his bio pages:

Was the Morning man at New York City radio station WXRK, just prior to Howard Stern.

This from my good friend Cleveland Wheeler:

Jay and I were long time mutual admirers in radio, and best friends. He was a Prince of a guy and a one of a kind talent. I have stories that would make you laugh so hard you would cry. Jay is one of those rare always positive people who will never really die. He will live in an eternal smile but I will forever miss him.

And his PD years with Sis and Stan Kaplan in Charlotte and Jacksonville.

Talented in so many ways!

Was not aware that Thomas also programmed. Thanks for sharing that.

Not to throw this too far off topic, but Cleveland Wheeler was the original PD and midday jock on XM's 60s on 6. What's he doing these days?

Super friendly & talented guy and our neighbor at Transtar/Unistar. A real down to earth guy. What a difference than his morning arch nemesis working across the street

Yes, Thomas was one of the final WKTU air staffers who remained during the transition to Rock as XRK. This guy could do or work any format and still be classy. He'll be truly missed.

He'll never tell "The Lone Ranger story" ever again. If I saw Jay was going to guest on a show I would watch just to hear him tell the story again. Even though I knew what was coming I savored every second of it.

I remember around 20 years ago he starred as Mr. Griffin in the NBC-TV movie "Killing Mr. Griffin" based on the Lois Duncan book of the same name. We read the book in 9th grade English Class and I taped the movie and brought it in for the class to watch. There were a lot of changes between the book and the movie. And not to drift too far off topic - another Lois Duncan book "Don't Look Behind You" was a FOX Family Channel made for TV movie starring Patrick Duffy and Pam Dawber as Mr. and Mrs. Corrigan. Again there were a lot of changes between the book and movie. Drifting further off topic the last name of two characters in the book "Don't Look Behind You" are last names of people I know in real life. At my last place of employment the store manager's name was Mr. Corrigan. And in the book Mrs. Corrigan's mother's last name is Gilbert. Gilbert is the maiden name of a friend of mine's mother. Drifting even further off topic I was shocked to learn earlier this year that Lois Duncan was another 2016 famous person death. Somehow I missed the memo about her death.

No one has mentioned "Love & War". That was my favorite Jay Thomas role. People didn't like his chemistry with Susan Dey. Well, I did. I just liked seeing Susan Dey, period. I wasn't a regular viewer of "L.A. Law" but I did see a few episodes.

Also "Mork & Mindy".
