Jeff and Jer, R.I.P. ?

Even though I no longer live in the San Diego listening area, I still have fond memories of listening to Jeff and Jer, and this is why I post about them. In high school, I had classmates that helped out with the first Human Flag. Listening to them helped get me through college at U.C.S.D. Every few years it became a big excitment to see if they would change stations, and a big anticipation to see what they would say or joke about when they got to their next new home. I'll never forget them making fun of 94.9 "The Right Mix, why we LOVE to listen around the office," or "Peanut Butter and Jelly? Say, didn't they replace us on B-100?" They became an inspiration for me when I decided that I wanted to work in radio, even when I ended up at a competing station.

Regarldess of wether you hate or love them, or of what sorts of things went on behind the scenes, the only thing that mattered was what I heard on the air, and it was, for a time, a lot of fun, and different then what anybody else had. It was professional big market radio, at least to me.

Now, as (well) eulogized by Chris on his website it seems that the show is over. Pending announcements have come and gone, promises that they would be back, broken; a syndicated weekend package never materialized.

The DSC and other shows like them have gone the distance. Is this it for Jeff and Jer? What went wrong? And don't tell me "it is because their show got stale." Taste is judgemental, there has to be more than that. What really happened? Why are they not back yet? Was it economics? Demographics? Or, is there some division within the group? What happened, and is it really over?

Even though I actually did like the show, I can't really see them coming back. I see in the showgram Facebook page they want them to come back, which I believe it's already a year they've been off the air...

If I were CBS Radio, I would put Jeff and Jer in the mornings on Sophie. Jennifer White could be a co-host on the show.

The last several years Jeff and Jer have been just stale!! AJ's Playhouse is a far better show! The sad thing is the most talented person on the show was Little Tommy! He has to be the most amazing producer that I ever had the pleasure of working with! All they had to do was mention a star and he went into his black book and had them on the phone! If DSC wanted some real stars they should call Little Tommy and get him on the show, and he will get every star possible!

Plus I kept hearing that Jeff and Jer were going to buy a station??? What happened to that?

They couldn't afford one, except maybe an AM where they'd end up doing one of those AM 1700 type shows where no one listens, ala Joe Bauer, Stacy Taylor.

When they were doing their video podcasts, their "humor" was pretty high on the "cringe meter."

Just not funny....although they think they are funnier than hell.

6 Feet under..

Little Tommy's still blogging away about his community activism (and he's got a lot going on) if you drill down through the otherwise very stale jeffandjer.com - Laura throws in something once in a while, but the rest of the site has become a ghost town.

One of the things that used to mark many successful stations was community involvement, but nowadays that seems to have degenerated into sending out two promo department interns with a stack of bumper stickers. I still think someone could benefit from putting Little Tommy on the payroll and letting him do his thing, spreading goodwill on the stations behalf. I still think that he was a lot of the reason for J and J's success: people really did respond to all those things they did outside the station. It made it feel like they were in fact your friends and neighbors, not just anonymous beings hidden away in a studio somewhere: that's what being "local" is all about.

At what point does "they're taking a long time to come back" turn into "they never returned?" How many months/years has it been?

When they announce that Q96 is just not going to be able to afford them.

Nicely done, oh my!

You too Garrett, don't you think that despite all the years that Jeff and Jer were the success in San Diego, they owe the fans, "Hey, we're sorry for being away for so long .... and so long?"

Yes, I completely agree. It's time for them to stand up and admit, it's over, thank the audience, and take a bow.
