Jeff Beck Dead at 78

Jeff Beck, the legendary British guitarist who played with Jimmy Page in The Yardbirds, then led his own band with Rod Stewart, has died at age 78.

His Beck's Bolero is still a classic after 50 years. More here:

Ouch. Horrible news. Beck was an extremely gifted player and humble guy. He never really sought the spotlight. The first two Jeff Beck Group albums are gold standards. His version of the Charles Mingus song "GOODBYE PORK PIE HAT" is sublime. He set the bar really high for guitarists. There's a version of "I'm Going Down" with Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan that is incredible. RIP...

One of my late father's favorite artists. What a shocker. May he forever and ever RIP...play that guitar up in the heavens, Jeff!! :(

He, Jimi, and Stevie Ray are already together, rehearsing.

I just wonder what it would be like if Stevie Ray wasn't in that helicopter crash. He had been making music with his brother at that point. Yes, there's going to be one heck of a guitar concert soon in the sky!

Here's a great video of Jeff performing Bolero with Jimmy Page during Jeff's induction into the Rock Hall of Fame 12 years ago:

The interesting story is that Jeff & Jimmy recorded the original Beck's Bolero back in the 60s. But only Jimmy got songwriting credit! If you hear the original, you'll hear Jimmy on acoustic guitar and Keith Moon on drums.

Yep, the first attempt at a 'supergroup' involving Jimmy Page and the others. The recording had Page (12-string), Beck (the electric guitar parts -- they put the amp in a closet to keep it from bleeding through to the other mics), John Paul Jones on bass and Keith Moon on drums (I think you can hear him yell out in the middle part).

Here is one of my favorite vids of Jeff Beck, in Beck Bogert & Appice. Jeff's playing his famous "Oxblood" Les Paul.

There was a Jeff Beck memorial concert in England over the weekend, hosted by Eric Clapton.

Lots of surprise guests, including Rod Stewart. However, no Jimmy Page. Jimmy & Jeff were very close. Don't know what happened there. Jimmy actually wrote & produced Beck's Bolero and inducted Jeff into the R&R Hall of Fame. (The video is a few posts above)

Here's the press release:
