Jeff Dauler Joining Star 94

Jeff Dauler resigned from The Bert Show this morning and is joining Star 94. He will be on the air in February. The station hasn't yet announced his shift.

There has been a rumor floating around--possibly partially untrue--that Dauler will join Jenn Hobby on a new Star 94 morning show, and Drex, Cassiday & Tingle will move to afternoon drive. I discounted the rumor because 1) PD Tony Lorino's strategy has been playing and being perceived as playing the most music. That was his strategy in KC. I noticed in afternoon drive, he seems to have eliminated jingles and has traffic reports running up the ramps of songs. This would fly in the face of that strategy, and 2) The station just had a cutback. How are they going to pay for talent like that?

For those reasons, I'm surprised even the Jeff Dauler part of this is true. Both Dauler and Hobby worked for Star 94 Market Manager Mike Fowler at Q100.

What's next?

A good move for Jeff. There's too much uncertainty at The Cloud Company. He gets to move from Banana #2 to Banana #1. If the Jenn Hobby rumor is true, Entercom will have a good morning team in place who work well together. And, should 99 decide or be forced to conclude that Bert costs more than they afford, he might well move somewhere where Jeff isn't interested. Better the known than the unknown.

Someone reminded me that Entercom has personality afternoon drive shows with 2 hosts on Hot AC stations in a couple of other markets. One is Portland, where the show is co-hosted by former Atlanta jock Mitch Elliott.

Yes, correct. Sure was a long time ago. I can't even remember if the Beat was CHR/Pop or CHR/Rhythmic at that time. I know they segued slowly into Rhythmic after Q100 went on air in January 2001.

Jeff's success will likely depend on who he's partnered with. If it's Jenn Hobby, the show probably has a good chance of succeeding.

Star hasn't yet announced his partner or daypart. (Mornings have been rumored.) The station has said that all current jocks will remain at the stations.

If I were Jeff Dauler, I would have done exactly the same thing.

Yea Networks (and Bert, by extension of Bert’s financial involvement in Yea) told Jeff exactly what they thought he was worth by letting him work without a contract for nearly a year. You can bet that narcissistic, broken little turd had his multi-year deal locked up tight (Ambien, liquor and divorce are all expensive hobbies). If I were Jeff, I’d be asking why in the hell my good buddy Bert wasn’t so much as lifting one of his stubby little elf-fingers to help get a deal done?

The whole “working without a contract” deal was just a way for Bert and Yea Networks to keep Jeff working on the show until a cheaper replacement could be found. Bert’s anger only stems from the fact that his plan didn’t work. I would even go so far as to suggest that this Brian Moote guy was already in the pipeline before Jeff signed with Star 94.

So I say good for Entercom / Star 94 to land a “star” name and a guy that obviously works hard and will add marquee value to a station long in need of some direction.
