Jeff Ferris retired from KLBJ gardening show

I had not listened in a while, then today heard one of the fill-in hosts say that Jeff has retired from the gardening show.

As I recall he took over "Gardening Naturally" host duties from John Dromgoole 5 or 6 years ago.

What happened? I hope he's well.

Well, not really. That thread is about the new hosts (3rd change in a couple of years) for 8-9 AM Saturdays. It does not mention anything about Jeff leaving, or about the future of the time slots he hosted.

I don't know if he mentioned his retirement on the show. I think we will see even more schedule changes, and more new hosts, due to Jeff's departure.

Just for the record, the other garden show hosts have mentioned that, as far as they know, Jeff suddenly stepped back from his shows without further explanation. I hope he's well.
Time will tell how the time slots will be filled.

I agree with everything southlander posted. My post about the new garden show did not include any information about Jeff Ferris leaving. (I don't know or remember if I knew about Jeff leaving at the time of that posting.) My post was only about that new show. I also agree with southlander that the hosts for the new show said Jeff was retiring and sounded like it was sudden and unexpected.

"Gardening Naturally" is (maybe was) an institution, having been started and kept going by John Dromgoole for some 40 years, until his own retirement. It was a pioneering show for years, and the larger market finally started to catch up with it.

I was a consistent listener for much of that time. I recall JD "auditioned" successor hosts over a period of time, so as to hand off the show to the most appropriate person, in his judgment. Jeff Ferris was a fine choice; he had some big shoes to fill!

My opinion is that Jeff Ferris would have preferred to also hand off the show to a like-minded successor, to continue the tradition, as it were, in an orderly fashion, but for some reason matters did not unfold in that way. Maybe someday we'll know what happened. For the present, it's not at all clear to me we'll continue to have 3 full hours of gardening advice every weekend morning.

I was listening to Sheryl McLaughlin (The Austin Gardener) last week and she said that she still did not know the reason that Jeff left the air so suddenly. She said that we might never know the reason. I would think she would have heard something through the station by now, but apparently not.
