Jeff Glor to host the CBS Evening News

Did you see ANY reporting from North Korea on the other channels? Probably not. Would you rather see something or nothing? That's up to you.

I have no interest in the Olympics.....or North Korea. Responsible news reporting would be something other than an empty promo for your corporate owners.

I don't see how reporting in North Korea promotes the Olympics taking place in South Korea. Any serious news operation would do whatever it took to get that access, given the sabre rattling taking place between the countries.

An on-the-scene reporter does not verify. They report what they see with their own eyes and what other witnesses or authorities have to say about the event. Verification is simply part of "being there".

Investigative reporters take rumor, hearsay and suspicions and try to get second source verification. That's a different kind of journalism from spot news coverage.

Reporting is reporting and a major part of any story is accuracy (which equates to verification). Investigative journalism is more in-depth than the normal "quickie" kind but the responsibility to ensure accuracy doesn't change. A staged event should be easy to detect and should be reported. Apparently it wasn't too difficult for others to observe. It was obvious to me this was nothing but cheerleading promotion very loosely disguised as a news feature. Worthless.

Once again, who are all the "others" you cite. I see only one person who felt it was staged. He wasn't there, and his credentials are biased, if you dig into his biography.

Your professor would advice you to get two sources. You only have one, and it's not credible.

There have been recent stories about the two Korea's combining athletes to compete in the Olympics (hockey teams for instance). But the NBC drumbeat is nothing more than putting Olympic features in front off the public to remind them of its place on NBC.

Of course, it is also possible that NBC actually buys the BS from the NK leader that suddenly NK is interested in reunification. If the NBC suits are buying that they are fools.

Says you.

I have many more than one source but he was the only one credited in the story. I viewed the "event" with my own eyes. You ever seen a ski resort without one single skier actually skiing while they filmed? Neither have I. You ever seen an entire ski area with people all wearing uniforms? Neither have I, again. Apparently a ton of commenters to the story agree with me as they are overwhelming of the opinion it was staged.

The North Koreans are pretty good at putting lots of people together in unison and blowing smoke. NBC apparently bought it. Disgraceful.

Want an accurate story about North Korea? Do it outside their borders where they cannot influence.

One last thing: The video in your linked story wasn't in the Nightly News. It was in the Today Show. The Today Show is four hours of fluff masquerading as news. The fact that they used the Nightly anchor to do a feature in a soft show shouldn't be an indictment of the Nightly show. Even Murrow and Wallace did feature puff pieces in their day.

I can't imagine anybody at NBC, or anywhere else - is stupid enough to think Kim Jong Il has any interest in reunification. It would be the end of his dictatorship. Nuclear weapons or not, there is absolutely NO way he would end up with any political power in the economic juggernaut that is South Korea.

NBC should have used someone else to do the ski story. The use of Holt indicates the suits thought it was news. Another error in NBC's judgement.

No it doesn't. As I said, it's not unusual for anchors to do light features from time to time. Especially in Holt's case. He does all kinds of things.

And as I said the use of Holt would cause most viewers to consider his assignments "news". OTOH, it also takes away his credibility from his "hard" news features.

Either way, NBC news is dead to me. I have the luxury of getting all the news I want from many other sources.

I didn't find Holt to be overly effusive and thought the blowback to be unnecessarily shrill. NBC spent a boatload of money to secure the Olympic broadcast rights. As evil and disgusting as the NK regime is, their participation as part of a unified Korean team is news and the report provided a rare look into the country. Granted what NBC was allowed to see was carefully selected by the regime, but isn't it better to get some eyes within that nation?

Jeff Glor is certainly as capable as his rivals at ABC and NBC.
Can CBS make their evening newscast stand out, being better
than rivals is the question they need to ask themselves.

It has now been several weeks since Jeff Glor took over at CBS.
Competent, charismatic perhaps but really few changes that make
viewers want to change from rival newscasts.........................

I didn't think much of Holt as a replacement for Brian Williams for this very reason.

For some reason, with glasses, he seems like an appropriate choice.

NBC just bought propaganda. The really important stuff will never be shown to the average citizen.

Glor has about the lowest level of enthusiasm I have ever witnessed from a news reader. But, I make my news viewing decisions on the content and not the reader so.....CBS it is for the time being. Always subject to change.

Well, that's harsh, but true. At least he isn't David Muir, who seems like the eternal, callow 28 year old. Lester Holt is hobbled by the NBC news organization. It's Glor by default. Although I think Judy Woodruff with the PBS News Hour seems more credible than the four letter trio on the three major networks.

Personally, I think CBS should have stuck with Anthony Mason, although I can understand the desire to groom a talent for the long haul. The evening news category clearly isn't as important as it once was.

I think that's true. No one single thing is as important as it once was. You could say that about a lot of things.

If I were much younger it would bother me no end watching 18 minutes of 'headlines' interspersed with non-stop medicine commercials targeted at much older people.

I just watch the evening news so I don't have to talk to my wife over dinner.

I don't have to watch commercials at all. I record everything. However, this week that changes. Lots of classic commercials last night on CBS, and the big game this Sunday.
