Jeff Glor to host the CBS Evening News

I don't have to watch commercials at all. I record everything. However, this week that changes. Lots of classic commercials last night on CBS, and the big game this Sunday.

If you don't want to waste your time watching the Big Game you can catch virtually every worthwhile commercial, along with analysis and commentary, on the web.

Also saves watching that disgusting halftime show.

Why do people always want to send me to the web? I have enough stuff to do there. Also, if I record everything it follows I can not only skip the game, but also the half-time show. I don't even know who's playing.

Have you ever heard of "FF Thumb"? You get it when you use your thumb to fast forward through all the stuff you don't want to watch to get to the stuff you do. It can be very painful and can prevent the easy opening of your favorite beer can.

The good thing is.....it doesn't matter who's playing. It is always the same sad show.

Well, that's harsh, but true. At least he isn't David Muir, who seems like the eternal, callow 28 year old. Lester Holt is hobbled by the NBC news organization. It's Glor by default. Although I think Judy Woodruff with the PBS News Hour seems more credible than the four letter trio on the three major networks.

Personally, I think CBS should have stuck with Anthony Mason, although I can understand the desire to groom a talent for the long haul. The evening news category clearly isn't as important as it once was.
Glor has more personality than Scott Pelley did, that man was dry. Im more shocked in why they brought in John Dickerson for the morning show.

A radio station I listen to has Jeff Glor doing news on the hour. I assume that was true before he became the TV anchor, but I didn't know he was doing radio too.

That's when I heard him.

CBS radio. Not a new thing. Many former CBS TV anchors have done CBS radio duty, though I don't know if one has actually anchored an on-the-hour newscast. But I do recall as a kid that Walter Cronkite would do features and segments for CBS radio.

An earthworm has more personality than Scott Pelley. Pelley is deja vu Roger Mudd all over again -- an excellent reporter but absolutely dead-boring to watch read the news. He was completely miscast in that role.

Charles Osgood also did a daily feature for many years, which ended when he retired last year.

Douglas Edwards, the anchor before Cronkite, moved to CBS radio, and was a top of the hour radio anchor for many years.

IIRC, from the 1950's thru 70's at least, the CBS TV correspondents were a regulars on CBS radio - Eric Severeid, Marvin Kalb (who is still with us), and others whose names I can't recall at the moment. Some did features or commentary, and others provided regular reports, just as they did for CBS TV. This happened with the other 2 networks too, to some extent, but less so than with CBS. Probably because CBS news radio was such a big presence - WCBS in New York, KNX in Los Angeles, KCBS in San Francisco, etc.

I can't agree. I liked him, even if I never saw more than the Friday evening "On the Road".

It wasn't always specific for radio. The radio news folks had access to the TV reports and often reused them on radio.

Yes, true. My local CBS radio station - KCBS, ran 60 Minutes for years - audio only, obviously - every Sunday night at 7:00 - same time as the TV broadcast. They may still be doing so, for all I know.

I kind of liked Pelley too. I thought he offered a cool, calming voice to the newscast. Glor isn't bad, just going to take this viewer a little getting more used to.

I've been liking David Muir more and more since Jeff Glor took over CBS. I don't know, I think he needs to get used to the role a little bit more. David is very professional and it seems like they are able to fit a few more news stories over at ABC than CBS. I really can't stand the 'world in 60 seconds' segment that now airs at the start of the CBS news. CBS This Morning does that kind of thing, and they decided to creep it over to the evening news. Let's just get to the first story, please.

I don't know where they get it but WSAT radio Salisbury NC has this list of headlines around 8:30 every morning with a male voice and a female voice alternating. You find yourself wanting more detail but that's not going to happen until ABC News on the hour.
