Jeff Katz (and Avi Nelson) filling in for Howie

Sandy mentioned on the Howie Carr show that Avi Nelson is in for HC Mon-Wed of this week and Jeff
Katz returns to fill in on Thu & Fri. He used to do two shifts at RKO--10-midnight (IIRC) and then
morning drive, with Darlene McCarthy. Katz was recently let go by WBT, I believe.
He's had controversial comments in the past--I think he was let go by a California station because
he remarked that there should be a game where people are rewarded with fast food if they run over
illegal aliens(1).

Katz: " It was clearly satire and totally in jest."

Well, we'll see if some interesting things get said, let's leave it at that!

WRKO has had some interesting hosts in that 10-mid. (or 11 pm-1 am) slot over the years (before it
went syndie)
Doug "VB" Goudie ("The Pit")
Jay Severin (yes, I do believe so...)
Jeff Katz
Tom "Tai" Irwin

Naah, he's not that old but he indeed came from the past days of Boston talk radio, the days of
Jerry Williams, David Brudnoy, Gene Burns, etc. Not all will agree with his opinions but he's not a screamer
or loudmouthed, and his diction and proper use of language will be a bit refreshing. Where are the young
voices of up-and-coming talk hosts that could do such fill-ins, on their way up the ladder?
At least it's not Col Hunt again (sorry Col.)
And yes, Katz, again was w/ RKO in years past

Another talk show host, actually hostess, like the cupcake, was Stephanie Miller, along with Jim Ward. His take on then-VP Al Gore was priceless!

Oh right--well I was mostly thinking of shows produced by WRKO in that slot, but they did
indeed have her through ABC Radio syndication. After awhile --June of '00 I think?--ABC
dumped her and there was a weird situation where she could be heard in places like Boston
but not L.A. on her now-former flagship, KABC! Steph had some regular callers from Boston,
including "Serious Brain Industry (name)" (I forget his name, but he talked reaaaaaaaaaalllly
sllllllllllllow...because he had been in an auto accident and suffered some trauma, etc.
She actually did a remote from Boston at one point near the end of her show...I think part
of it was live from a taxi.

You are talking about Stephanie Miller in the past tense but she still does a show out of LA, though it isn't aired in this market. I think it might be on the air in Northhampton, MA. She still gets calls from Boston so there must be people listening via Internet streaming.

Do you think that Darlene will be a surprise guest when Katz is on the WRKO airwaves?

LOL, yeah I hear they weren't exactly the bestest of friends

And yeah, I stream Steph from KTLK every morning

Katz' tenure with RKO was so unremarkable, the only thing I remember is the promo they'd use that made fun of the fact that the Bob Raleigh show opposite him on 'BZ would give away pens.

Jerry Williams was known as the Dean of talk radio in these parts, but Avi is up there, in my opinion.

If this is the same guy (Jeff Katz) who posts constant Steve Leveille criticisms under the name "katzradio" - I'd say he has a pretty big conflict of interest! Maybe there should be a disclaimer on those posts.

From the timeline I've seen his late night RKO show would have competed not only with Bob Raleigh but also with Steve L.
