Jeff Katz coming to WXKS-AM April 5

Clear Channel has announced the host of the morning show on Rush Radio 1200 to be Jeff Katz. It seems like CC actually put some thought into this one. He has been on the air in Boston before on WRKO and he has had many other major market gigs (KNEW in San Francisco and WPHT in Philadelphia) and has most recently been on WFTL in Ft. Lauderdale and, before that, WBT.

That is a surprisingly good choice. Jeff is very good and has an impressive resume. The signal not withstanding, I think the jury is still out on this station because they had to pull the trigger on the format change far earlier than anticipated.

Not to say that this station will ever challenge the likes of WBZ for supremacy, but it might do okay. It's performance is somewhat limited by the overwhelming amount of syndicated fare that is lined up. Basically, you get one local show and the rest is syndicated. Granted, it's top-notch syndicated programming, but it's still not local.

He was filling in for Howie at one point in the not too distant past IIRC,

I wonder if he is going to uproot the family or do it ISDN?

"Wakin' Up with Katz and McCarthy... On WRKOOoooooo!!"

As long as that doesn't come back, I'm OK with it.

I always thought he was a first-class jerk with little, if any, talent. Doesn't he have a history of trying to hypo his perennially flagging ratings with stunts and utterances that attract attention to him but also get him in a passel of trouble--particularly with various ethnic minorities? I guess you could give him credit for being an equal-opportunity offender--that is, over the years, he has managed to offend just about every minority on the planet. I give him 18 months at WXKS (AM).

I didn't know he was on the beach. Again. This is not aimed at good radio, it is aimed at stunting. He failed in Boston in two day parts. It's gonna be a stunt-fest.

I think it follows the mold of WPHT (1210AM) in Philly.

Local Morning show (Michale Smerconish) and the rest of the day is syndicated with top shows.

Even Smerconish's morning show is no longer local to Philadelphia. It became syndicated last year, with the flagship being WPHT, aka "The Big Talker 1210". In fact, even the "local" breaks at the top of the hour on his morning show are not exclusive to Philly anymore; sister station WHFS-AM "The Big Talker 1580" also carries the show, so during these so-called "local" breaks, Smerconish will say he is on "The Big Talker" without giving a frequency. Slick.

Not quite. WPHT actually goes local after Hannity with Dom Giordano and, on Fridays, with a Sinatra show featuring Sid Mark. They have a smattering of other local content plus programming as the flagship for the Phillies. So it's not that good of an analogy, actually. Not to mention that WPHT is a CBS property. Clear Channel has had a tendency (lately) to run leaner.

I am a bit surprised by the choice of Katz.

I've heard him many times on different stations over the years and always thought he was a very average and not especially unique or original talent. He's conserva-clone all the way.

Ho hum.

In his new column Scott Fybush wonders if the Katz show could spread to CC talkers in Worc., Prov.,
and Manchester and seacoast of NH

In other words, Helen Glover could get voted off the island after all? ::)

Did anyone listen to Katz's first show back in the area?

Yes, parts of it (normally not up that early but woke up in wee hours, couldn't get back to sleep,
then finally did take a nap later--I work nights)--not much diff. from when he did fill ins for Howie
(even similar music bumpers). At first mostly him talking (not too many calls?) then at least one
"fan" of his from way back did call, etc. Talk of various issues incl. the S. Hadley situation
