Jeff Miller and "We Are Marshall"

The movie "We Are Marshall", just released in theaters, about the rebuilding of the Marshall University football team after the infamous 1970 plane crash that killed almost all of the players and coaches. Depictions of
the crash include a short clip of a Mutual radio newscast the night of the crash. ("Incredibly, another plane crash... this one involving the Marshall University football team....")

I recall that Jeff Miller, formerly of WGUL and a West Virginia native, used to have a website that contained a clip of that newscast, which I believe he archived himself while working the night of November 14, 1970. I wonder if the movie
used Miller's clip specifically, and whether he received any credit or renumeration if that was the case?

Trivia: The announcer in the Mutual newscast was the father of comedian/commentator Bill Maher.

Hi, Jeff Miller here. The web page which has three CBS radio newscasts the morning after the Marshall crash, and I think two Mutual newscasts the night of the crash is still up at

I did record the CBS newscasts at WJLS in Beckley, W. Va., where I worked. The Mutual newscasts were recorded by a friend who worked at WLOG in Logan. He gave Mutual some reports by phone. He later worked at WJLS and loaned me the tape. I gave a couple of other web sites permission to use the sound files.

I don't think the sound files are used in the movie, but I haven't seen the movie yet. A few seconds of the Mutual newscasts, however, are used in a very nice trailer for the movie at

which also includes a few seconds of Roger Mudd reading the story on the CBS TV evening news.
