Jeff Munn

This week, with the Phoenix Suns on a (winless and mostly Steve Nash-less) tour of the Eastern Conference, I've noticed that Jeff Munn -- who I believe is still the PA announcer for AZ Diamondbacks games at Bank One Ballpark Chase Field -- has been filling in for Al McCoy on KTAR-AM. I had never heard him doing play by play before, so I wasn't sure what to expect - but I must say that I'm very impressed.

Al McCoy is a legend and the best at his profession, and I'm certainly looking forward to hearing him on the air again for as long as he decides to keep going. But when the day comes that he decides to step down, I wonder if Munn would consider taking over permanently.

I sure do miss hearing Jeff on the mic at America West Arena US Airways Center...

Jeff Munn hasn't been the PA voice at Chase Field in many years. Over the course of approximately 20 games this season Jeff will be filling in for Al McCoy (primarily for longer road trips such as the one the Suns are on currently).

His play-by-play is adequate I suppose, though his list of adjectives/descriptions is rather limited... though the shoes he has to fill are mighty big ones. It's not really fair to compare Al McCoy, a legend, to JeffMunn.

Al McCoy is so good, he makes EVERY other basketball announcer sound less appealing. He, essentially, has spoiled us. But he has been doing that gig a long time.
Jeff Munn is a master broadcaster, and can handle anything thrown at him well, and great if given a little time in the saddle. You can't go on the road and fill in for a legend and reach your stride after a game or two. I haven't even heard one basketball game Jeff has called, but I heard him anchor the news on KTAR when Jeff Scott was news director, and he just got better and, at the end, took a back seat to nobody in this market. Jeff was the voice of Your Phoenix Suns at American West Arena, which wasn't an easy job to land. He also filled in for Diamondback baseball games and did as good as anyone could, and would have been great if he had done it full time.
Al has chosen not do all the road games, and with this year's team, the timing could not have been better. Good luck, Jeff!
