Riding down Hwy 72 on Sunday and see that Roper is in the Greenwood area broadcasting to the pinetrees and peachpickers do a STEVE /CHARLIE format on the new You 94 . I thought he was suppose to be the Country King?

From everything I have heard over the last decade, in his mind, he will always be the king. I believe the Greenwood station is one of the itty bitty stations that he owns with his secret money supply. At least if he is working for himself, the boss will be as big a fan as he is, and maybe can hold on the gig.

He definitely owns it along with his wife who is reported to have the money in the family. He thinks he is the king, but it is definitely only in his mind and frankly I am happy to have him out of Columbia.

Jeff has a lot of talent as a morning DJ. I worked with him @ WCOS while he did the morning show. I had a lot of fun times working with him. The bottom line is, either you hate him or love him. ;)

I guess that I am one of those people that cannot satnd him and the side of him I saw was arrogant and pushy, and incredibly juvenile.

I heard a lot of bad things too about Jeff. I try to look past all of that.

I've worked with Jeff on two different occasions. Once when he was at WCOS on Millwood and I was at WNOK on Pickens(when we didn't have a lot of contact), and again when we kicked off New 92 in January 2005(when we both worked in the same building). Although I've heard the stories and stuff, I've gotta say, insofar as my experience with him goes at New 92, Jeff Roper was one of the most gracious, helpful and friendly fellow employees I've ever worked with. He was always looking for an angle in the community where we could make an impact...not just for his show, but for every daypart. Very knowledgable guy where radio and community are concerned (especially on the subject of how radio and community can form a symbiotic relationship). Again, this is just my experience with him while I was at New 92 from Jan 2005-Apr 2005. I've got no gripes with Jeff.

I've known Jeff for more years than most have you have been alive. He is cocky, yes, he can be annoying, yes, he can be full of himself, yes, he has done some things in radio that most of us couldn't, yes, his demeanor is sometimes irritating, yes, he's won an award, yes, he's laying the next stepping stone for his future, yes, he's really a funny and humble guy if you get to know him. (Screetching tires) What?

It's true. Jeff puts on his pants like the rest of us. I'll be accused of being a family member, but those who read this crap probably dreamed of working in a Major Market......and he did. So what if it didn't work out. Life goes on. Be well Jeff.

What station does Andy Woods work for? Wonder if it's the same AW I knew years ago.....I remember that he had a pretty good set of pipes

I know exactly who he is! You guys were on the topic of different loves and hates in area DJs. I worked with Andy years ago. Anyone else?

I worked with Andy Woods at WCOS... Great talent... Knew that he was a great talent, too. Young, eager, hard working... A very cool person no doubt

Jeff Roper is apparently lending his talents to this syndicated (sat-delivered) format --

You can see Jeff's bio under the "On the Air" tab. This format was started last Fall by Rodney Baucom after he departed the JoyFM network (Southern Gospel flagship WXRI 91.3, Winston-Salem).

Man, I just don't get it. The Jeff Roper I knew was one of the most humble, grounded, nice people I've ever met. The descriptions I've read on here are absolutely 180 degrees off from the guy I met in 1991.

Here's what i do know. WZOK/Rockford was a monster, literally had 25+ shares forever. Roper was the latest in a long line of very successful morning shows, and he was the biggest in years. The owners of the station had always done radio much bigger than the market, knew how important a morning show like that was, and fell all over themselves giving Jeff the "star" treatment. I first met Jeff on my first interview there. He was helping a promotions assistant load up a van for an appearance. All of the other DJs at the station just showed up at their appearances, did their breaks, and left, leaving the set up and tear down to the promotions department. Roper not only helped with setup and teardown, but often took them to dinner afterwards.

He'd get off the air every day, do his produced elements for the next day's show, then grab all the dubs in the overworked production director's box and do them. The station charged big money for him to voice spots (in addition to his talent fees), so he'd grab me, a salesperson, even listeners to do the tags, but how may 30 share morning shows do you know that knock out 10-20 dubs a day?

Fairly or not, most morning shows find themselves resented in their radio stations. That wasn't the case with Roper at ZOK. I honestly don't think there was a single person in that building who didn't genuinely like him, and a lot of them would've take a bullet for him.

When he left, it was like someone died. Everyone in that building was depressed for months. I got really lucky with his replacement (Eric Ferguson, now mornings at MIX/Chicago), but people treated him like crap in that building, just because they missed Roper so much. He was cut from the same cloth as Jeff, a decent, humble guy with no ego who would do whatever it took to help anyone, but Roper was such a hard act to follow.

I guess success could have gone to Jeff's head, but that is so unlike the person I knew I just find it really hard to believe. Especially since he grew up the son of a big time radio personality. If he lived that life growing up, and was the way he was in Rockford, I don't see how getting to the show, which he was familiar with because of his dad, would have such a massive effect on him.

Anyway, I hope that's the case. I really like the Jeff Roper I knew.

Yeah, I'm not sure where that rep came from either, Sean. He's been nothing but gracious and friendly at every place we've worked together. I've heard horror stories, but as time has gone on, I've discovered that most of those stories were embellished to make Jeff look like an ogre. The closest we ever came to having "words" was when I was at WNOK about to hire a part timer that used to work at WCOS for Roper. Jeff called me and said I'd be making a mistake to hire the kid. We were extremely short staffed, so I hired him anyway, and, just like Jeff said, it was a mistake. And I don't give a rat's ass what anyone else says, he should have been the PD from the start at New 92 instead of Randy Chase. Game, set, match.

But, then again, Sean, I seem to recall a time when you and I were, at times, referred to as supreme [EDIT] in the hallways. Never knew why...lol. ::)
