Steve Burke will leave NBC in 2020 according to the release

Burke is stepping down during a pivotal time, just ahead of the firm’s most significant foray into streaming.
NBCUniversal is moving closer to unveiling its successor to CEO Steve Burke.

Jeff Shell, chairman of NBCUniversal film and entertainment, is expected to get the top job, with an announcement to be unveiled as early as next week, a source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter. Burke is planning to step down after his contract expires in August 2020, just after NBCUniversal's coverage of the Tokyo Olympics.

Shell, 54, currently oversees NBC Entertainment, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, Telemundo and NBCUniversal International. In 2013, he was named chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment and previously oversaw NBCUniversal International.
