LINCOLN NATIONAL CORP. has closed on its purchase of JEFFERSON-PILOT CORP. for $7.5 billion and thus enters the broadcasting business with J-P's 18 radio and three TV stations. JEFFERSON-PILOT COMMUNICATIONS has the new name of LINCOLN FINANCIAL MEDIA but remains based in GREENSBORO.

At least something is staying in the 'Boro. It's not as huge an employer as the company is as a whole, but the Gate City's been up in arms over just how much they're going to lose in this deal, so it's nice to see something stay behind.<P ID="signature">______________
