What are the chances that Lincoln National will grow the Jefferson Pilot group of stations into new markets: Say like maybe buying the ABC/Disney Radio Station group? Do they have that kind of money and ability? Is it possible? What other groups of stations might they be able to buy? They say they are excited about operating in the business of radio! David what do you think?

One news story indicated that the media properties were not really discussed during negotiations: it was all about the insurance business. The radio and TV stations are a very tiny part of JP.

Here's a quote from an AP story:

"Lincoln National has no immediate plans for Jefferson-Pilot Communications, a unit that owns and operates three television stations, 18 radio stations and a sports production and syndication business. Executives said they focused on the companies' core businesses during buyout talks."

Logic would dictate that they would most likely try to unload the media stuff.

thats the MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR question!

Should be fun to watch this unfold with all the management and suits.

Broadcasting is not what insurance companies do. (Nationwide) JP makes a good coin with their operations, but it's very out there compared to actuarials. My guess is that in time, a lengthy period of time, that Lincoln sells the communications division. JP communications is not a large group and could easily be absorbed by several companies willing to have those fine operations in their stable. Nothing stays the same.

Here's the thing, Nationwide Insurance (the guys who used to own "The EEEEEAGALE" 94.1 and Magic 95.7) had so much money, they could have lost every penny in their radio unit and still have plenty of money. Jacor knew this, and took advantage of it, offering them plenty to scoop of the stations NCI had.
Here's what I think (and let's be careful about speculation), but Nationwide really didn't care about NCI broadcasting in the end. I don't know if there are any JP clusters out there, I only seem to see these two and three station deals everywhere. I'll bet someone like Cumulus, or Entercom or even Infinity will be happy to eat up the table scraps. But right now, it's just too early to even think about speculating.

So I propose we just leave it at that...

Pssst: BTW, this thread is straying dangerously astray from San Diego radio. Just a warning to the wise...
Edited by Garrett on 10/12/05 03:20 PM.

Or at least it was until you brought up NCI's operations in the market. (Thanks.)

Here's a question for you all: What do you think will happen at KSON, KIFM, and
KBZT in the short- and long-term as a result of JP being absorbed?
______________

Well, I know the company line is that nothing is going to change.

But we've all heard that one before...

Part of me thinks that status quo is possible - the group has good cash flow, so investment-wise it makes sense to let it run undisturbed.

But anytime someone says they're not going to change a thing during a takeover, it usually means they're going to make changes.
______________

JP stations will get spun like cotton candy.

It's the "we're focusing on the core business" line that caught my eye. That translates to "We bought the insurance business and that's the only part we want."

I predict (go on, mark it down so you can razz me when I'm wrong) that Lincoln will divest the comm unit once all the dust has settled.

In the meanwhile, to answer KM's question, the San Diego JP stations will run on autopilot, lulling their employees into the belief that everything's going to go on as usual forever, until one day they come to work having read in USA Today that their division has been sold... The same way the folks at ARS, Citicasters, Nationwide, AMFM, Chancellor and so many more have.

Hey - all those companies were absorbed by the same giant! How 'bout that...
