JELLI IN VEGAS

From Radio-Info today: Mike Dougherty thinks it could be the most distinctive new radio programming tactic since Jack FM crossed the border from Canada six years ago – listeners to KVBE (94.5) and KHIJ (96.7) will call the shots for the music, practically in real time, from the Jelli website or iPhone app. Bay Area-based Jelli first tried out the technology on Sunday nights at San Francisco’s alternative “Live 105” KITS and the resulting expansion has mostly been in evening dayparts, branded with local station names. (Clear Channel’s WKLS “Project 961” dubs the 7pm to midnight block “Remote Control.”) Dougherty tells TRI that “Three months ago, looking at our 25 markets, we thought, wouldn’t it be cool to have a radio station, 24/7, powered by the social web?” He found not one but two, in the same market. The multi-year agreement with LKCM Radio Group and Aurora Media lets Dougherty brand both Vegas stations as “Jelli.” Mike says “one will have a rock flavor and one a pop flavor.” A couple of caveats - Nobody really knows what a fulltime social web-powered (and automated) station might sound like on the air. And these FMs (KVBE, Moapa, NV and KHIJ, Bunkerville) aren’t the biggest of signals. In fact, they both citygrade St. George, Utah and are rimshot signals to Vegas.

>>Wasn't KXTE carrying Jelli on Sunday nights? Anyone know how that worked out? This might be fun, and at least those frequencies will be doing something.

i need to know if the vibe of vegas is going to become a internet dance station like pulse 87.7 i will never listen to jelli fm in las vegas.

they are changing the format to pop no more dance in vegas unless 94.5 the vibe continues as a internet station. right now i am ejoying the vibe it seems they are playing more dance remixes and freestyle classics in the last days of the vibe in vegas.

If they go pop that means there will be FIVE CHR stations in Las Vegas! That's about as many as any market has ever had at any time. Although 94.5 is such a weak signal they are pretty much a non-factor.

Why do I think this Jelli experiment is going to tank?

Everyone has differing tastes in music...even if they listen to the same genre. To jumble up tracks of differing formats at various times, just because people demand it, isn't necessarily going to fly.

Oh well.....

It has been announced that 94.5 The Vibe will cease broadcasting in June, and will be replaced by a new format called Jelli. KVBE's parent company, Aurora Media, has already signed a multi-year agreement in which the Jelli format will be on full time. Up until now, the Jelli format has been a part time format on 25 radio stations in several markets, including Chicago, New York, Atlanta, and San Francisco. There will be 2 Jelli stations in the Las Vegas market, the other will air on 96.7 KHIJ which operates from the same tower as KVBE. KVBE will be the pop formatted version, while KHIJ will be the rock formatted version. [2]

the vibe isnt going anywhere vegas will always be its home i am thinking they are going to continue on the internet. maybe 96.7 is going to be jelli fm a rock format.

blazin2009, it's encouraging to see that you quoted my edit to KVBE's wikipedia page...

That I do not know... but if you liked the Vibe pre-July 2010 check out www.surgeradio.org - Complete with Mitch Craig, IQ Beats, and the works, just like the original Vibe before Tic Tak and Mike O took over! Current Dance Hits along with all the tracks that The Vibe refuses to play anymore. Mitch Craig does most of the liners, but some of them are done by Yegor Vedoff from Ukraine and Handy Andy from KGRG 89.9 in Seattle.

Dang... talk about bitter!!!

I actually enjoy stations that are mostly jockless with really cool imaging, and mix shows at night.

I live in San Diego but listen to The Vibe on my iPhone at the gym. I prefer it over Pride Radio which sounds stale. I hope the app continues after June..
