Jenn Engel out...

It would probably be any of the 105.3 shows, or Lex and Terry on the Edge. I don't think any other major show really qualifies as guy talk or raunch radio...

But I'd take exception to your idea that they are the #1 alternative for that audience. Doing some counter-programming research a few years back, discovered that the Ticket shares more with the traditional talk stations and a couple of music stations much more than 105.3. IIRC, only like 10% of their audience flips between 1310 and 105.3.

Firstly, it's not my idea that they're the number one alternative. I don't know if they are, so I was simply asking the question.

I find it interesting, though. The Stern types, the Opie and Anthonys, the Mancow types of shows aren't around here. If I want something hilarious and slightly lowbrow, I really have only a sports station locally--and in most of the cities I'm aware of, that isn't the case.

That's why I believe The Ticket is the greatest radio station I've heard--EVER. They've managed to get real, talented, inventive, engaging talent on the air with a format that suits their abilities. And with content that allows them to use those abilities however they wish to appeal to their audience.

I wouldn't go as far as you, but the thing I like about KTCK is their ability to pivot and move from real sports into lifestyle stuff seemlessly.

I've heard Russ MArtin when he's forced to talk about a big win. And he sounds disinterested. And I've heard Coop, Galloway, etc when they're forced to talk about a major cultural event (Emmys, Sopranos, Lohan train wreck, whatever) and they seem totally disinterested.

They may not be the best sports guys around, they may not be the best lifestyle peeps (Hi Kidd!) around, but they have the best of both worlds...If you want sports, but also want to hear a little about the news of the day or the latest E-news kerfluffle, they're your ticket...

HSOs one and all, I'm feeling it.

Little, well said. They should rename their genre of radio, "B.S. Air" because that's what it is. You know how when you are sitting somewhere (in your cube, standing in a line, at lunch by yourself... please, we have all done it) and you hear two people cracking each other up in conversation? Admit it, you lean in just to hear what the eff. Same thing with the boys on the Ticket. It's human nature to check out what's so funny.

They have tapped into that market like none other... problem is, they have also fallen prey to pride because of the fame. Rarely an e-mail goes answered, and if it does, it's shunned. Calls? Please... it is forced, and that's shameful because if those lines weren't lit up, their backsides would be (on the unemployment line after a while).

Imagine the Irvin show. I would completely check into that... problem is, his "way too routine but yet let's call him special guest" host would be Deion Sanders and Emmitt Smith. Two people that has no business being on air - one is a lune and loves to hear himself talk way too much and the other is just about illiterate.

One parting shot? KESN should just blow up their allegiance to CBS 11 and believing national sports really speaks to the Dallas sports fan and begin from scratch thinking about this market from its new inception.

But it won't...the Disney and ESPN O&Os are about brand extension, not building local stations with all-local talent not connected to the national ESPN network. ESPN has, has tried, or looked at ESPN-branded games, TV sets, mobile phones, stores, magazine, restaurants, etc. So, KESN isn't going to be live and local 5:30-7AM to talk about "our teams in our town" to take on the Ticket. Even Galloway's show is often just a platform to interview ESPN reporters, bloggers, etc.

I just think there's a place for a local, non-syndicated sports station for people who like hard core sports. The difference being that a more sports oriented talk station requires people who are just as talented as the group on The Ticket, and that certainly has not been provided either.

The problem is there is ZERO loyalty in pure sports talk because most of it is so generic. You talk about WFAN.

The first time I ever heard WFAN, (long before the ticket), they had Imus on in the morning, and I spent the day driving around listening to Mike and the Mad Dog do movie reviews and talk about hiccups for 45 minutes. The first 45 minutes I listened to an all-sports station, they never talked about sports for 5 seconds.

Real sports talk with no personality no nonsense, is pretty generic and pretty boring. People will tune in when they want a bit of a fix, but it is not the kind of thing that will keep people tuned in the next month, week, day, quarter hour. I like my doses of pure sports now, but it is small doses, and at night, I can listen to ESPN as easliy as I can listen to Sporting News Radio on the Ticket. They are virtually identical.

You will never get solid ratings with straight sports talk across the board, because there is no other reason for people to come there, and there are too many alternatives. The old days of the 6:00pm Sports Talk Shows on the radio thrived in a time when there was almost no sports exposure on radio or television. With the advent of TV, The ticket, Espn Radio and the rest...

Sure you can run pure sports all day, but you are competing with 25 other sources.

I listen to parts of the Ticket because they are entertaining. When it comes to sports that interest me, I know certain shows are better versed than others.. but I am not there for the sports all the time. But I get enough sports to get me by....

The audience for pure sports is small. I know my dad would LOVE it. But there are not many like him.

All I can say is that you must not have heard WFAN lately. No Imus. Even when they still had him this past year, the rest of the day didn't have hiccups, etc.

I'm just going to assume you didn't read the entire thread, since making sports "generic" isn't what I was describing in the least.
