Jeopardy host Alex Trebek is on Medical Leave

Trebek isn't to blame here. The PA choice of him as moderator is what is questionable. And further, letting Alex do this on his own terms was also questionable. Mistakes from PA officials are unfortunately very evident here.

I'll agree with you that it was an odd and probably a bad choice. I am not sure that Alex Trebek has ever even BEEN to Pennsylvania before, let alone lived here. There are plenty of local journalists who actually know something about the issues in our state who would have been a far better choice.

Really a tin ear to bring-up the whole Catholic Church abuse topic. This state has a HUGE Catholic population.
He should have done his homework.

Finding a journalist for this might have been tricky. First, the debate was being hosted by the Chamber, which is obviously does not employ any journalists. In many cases, political debates are sponsored by television stations (or ownership groups like Nexstar). And the Chamber might not have wanted to "favor" any particular outlet by having a KYW anchor or a KDKA anchor moderate it. Second, the incumbent governor did not seem to be all that interested in having debates at all. The Chamber might have seen an out-of-state celebrity as "moderator" as an incentive to him. (The challenger has apparently urged a series of dozens of debates across PA.)

It seems to me the ideal moderator would have been the chair/president of the Chamber, since they both agreed to attend the Chamber's event.

Especially not to joke about it. Bringing it up would have been legitimate, in a "what do you think about the legal system stepping in to the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic church?" kind of way.
