Jeopardy!-Watson does well in ratings

It was an interesting show today to be sure but most of the early questions dealt with trivia type answers which are relatively easy for a computer to process. It's the deductive questions that are more challenging and would provide a more equal comparison between man and machine.

In my opinion, the strong ratings represent the curiosity factor. I watched and was pretty unimpressed. How fun is it to watch a machine beat two highly intelligent former prize winners? I think it was smart of them to only do three games.

I am getting a little tired of the stiff and stilted format of Jeopardy and it was refreshing to see something a bit different. Having once worked in this area of the computer industry it is interesting for me to see how far they've come in a very difficult subject area. I think more than anything though it has again proven that a computer, properly programmed and filled with appropriate data, can produce rote answers more reliably than humans and usually faster too. The thing that is still missing are the emotional and other nuances that alter the words we speak - as well as the relationships that exist between speakers.
