Jerry Allison, the drummer for Buddy Holly and The Crickets who is credited as a co-writer on "Peggy Sue" and "That’ll Be the Day," has died. He was 82.
Jerry was a co-writer of the song, and is mostly playing the tom toms. Norman Petty engineered the recording, and switched between straight mic of the drum and a flanging technique, which was somewhat new at the time. That's what gives the drums their unique sound. You can hear the effects switching in and out during the recording. There is a stereo remix where this is even more evident.
