Jerry Blavat dies at 82

from WHYY "Jerry Blavat, the legendary disc jockey known as “The Geator with the Heater” and “The Boss with the Hot Sauce” has died, Action News has learned. He was 82.
He passed away at 3:45 a.m. Friday, surrounded by his four daughters at hospice at Jefferson-Methodist Hospital.
Blavat was recently suffering from medical issues related to a shoulder injury and had to cancel an upcoming show at the Kimmel Cultural Campus due to his health, according to his website."

I had the honor of board op'ing his live shows on Kool 98.3 WTKU back in 2018. Grew up listening to his shows on WVLT 92.1 years ago, basically my inspiration for getting into radio myself.

It was reported he died from complications due to myasthenia gravis, a nerve disorder.

The thing I always found most interesting about Jerry Blavat is he worked early in his career at stations with small signals and low ratings, WCAM and WHAT, and yet became famous. His act was different and imaginative.

What I can never forget is when he appeared on an episode of the Monkees. If anyone has a chance check it out, its hilarious because the music of the bands was at the other end of the spectrum from the Soul, Doo Wop and R&B sound that Jerry embraced, but he acted great. Pat St John did a nice tribute to him at the end of his Sirius/XM show yesterday with a few of his air checks. Keep on Rockin' cause you only rock once, RIP my friend....

Well he did work at the very powerful WPGR. The station was so powerful in fact that the neighbors had no choice but to listen because it played non-stop on their toasters, chandeliers, and drain pipes.

In the 70s, The Geator was heard on WCAU-FM (when it was Oldies) and also on WIBG. He joined WFIL in the early 80s. It's likely that his TV work gave him the most exposure and contributed to much of his success.

He went against Holiday Sunday (DAS-FM) nights, Holiday eventually won the battle although I think Jerrys show was so much better, music and presentation wise...

I disagree regarding this battle you speak of. Considering both of their decades long very successful careers, they were both winners and they both left on top.

Googling the nightclub he owned in Margate yields many interesting reviews

He was so good on WCAM that people would drive far just to hear him on WCAM since its signal wasn’t that good

It’s interesting that you say that. I was talking to someone with knowledge about that very subject last week. I listened to WVLT the day he died and it was mentioned very briefly but he received virtually no accolades on the air. From what I was told, the DJ’s almost never mentioned the Geator and the Geator didn’t mention other DJ’s. If everyone stuck to that rule, they all lived happily ever after.
