Jerry Russell Gets Fined by the FCC!!!

This is copied from the Texas board. It was on the FCC Daily Digest today. Of course, Russell's EAS violations are just the tip of the iceberg. When are they going to nail him for the other 1000 rules he's violating? Or does he have a "Bishop Willis waiver?"

FCC Fines Texas AM For EAS Violation
The FCC fines JERRY RUSSELL $8,000 for EAS violations at his Country KWRD-A/HENDERSON, TX. RUSSELL had brokered the station's programming to a third party and told the FCC he was unaware that the station's EAS unit was damaged, but the Commission says the licensee is responsible for the station's operations.

CALLING THE FCC! GET THIS BUZZARD NAMED JERRY DON RUSSELL OFF THE BROADCAST MAP IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!! HE NEEDS TO BE LOCKED AWAY!!!!!!

The fcc has a webpage for complaints. I just sent one on the station in Cleveland 95.3 for playing unedited rap songs with lots of mf references.

Why do people keep selling stations to people like this? There are radio stations all over the place that have either been ruined or completely off the air because of these people like Willis and Jerry Russell. Some of them stations with quite a history and heritage. Its really sad to see.

Some seem to think that a signed note is money in the bank. If you have a station(s) for sale, get cash. That is why I have stated many times on this board that those that have the cash can find and close a deal. Those that take paper often get stung...and each occurance makes securing a finance deal more difficult.
Soon the formula will be: No Cash= No deal. ( Of course there will always be
the eternal optimists)....Thanks JBI

It has been a long time ago now but the fcc use to require the applicant to demonstrate and certify that they had the financial resources to operate station for three years with no income. I think that has lot to do with it now but that would seperate the men from the boys.

It seems MRS Ventures got another fine - this time $7,000 for not having a lock on the fence surrounding the WDSK-AM tower. Saw that in the digest today. ::)

As I responded to the poster in the Texas board who relayed this info over there,

"And the hits just keep on comin'...."

Let's see...this makes now the THIRD MRS Ventures radio station license to be assesed a forfeiture, IIRC.

KZEY(AM) Tyler, TX $11,000
KWRD-AM Henderson, TX $ 8,000
WDSK-AM Cleveland, MS $ 7,000

GRAND TOTAL: $26,000

No wonder he's in hiding, as some have suggested. Question is...is he hiding from the FCC or his investors?

I'm amazed that is all they got fined for. There's a laundry list of violations in Cleveland, including the illegal LMA, operating WDSK at night with day power, no tower lights at WDTL, EAS violations, Public File violations, stations off-air without silent authority, etc. Perhaps there are more fines on the way.

Larry, you strike me as a rather astute person in the field of broadcasting. What will it take to finally break this broadcasting scoundrel and get him off the airwaves?

C414B you beat me to the punch.

How many fines does the FCC level against a single broadcaster before they take more aggressive action?

Bishop Willis got away with this kind of stuff for almost two decades before the FCC got serious about doing anything to him. And I'm firmly convinced that the Commission tends to look the other way when a minority licensee is involved.

$$$$$$ If you got the cash, you get the station. There are no qualifications to be met other than the money. Just like buying any on-going business.
In Larry's case, he got cash, and got out of the way. Smart businessman. Someone I admire.

Kind of makes me wonder why I ever feared the FCC. It took them years to shut down KFCC in the Baytown-Houston, TX area after they moved their tower away from their COL. It took them two decades to deal with Willis...and now the same thing is taking place with Russell.

FCC: Russell, your lack of tower lights are a serious danger to airmen, you signal is illegal, your paperwork is a mess, you have no EAS and you have not honored the requirements of a licensee. I'm afraid we're gonna have to fine you.

Russell: *&$% YOU! I AIN"T PAYING NO #$&^#($(#*# FINE!!!!

FCC: Um, okay. We're just going to go over here and hang out for a while then.

THat's a far cry from when I entered the business. The FCC was "THE HIGH COMMISSION". You dared not annoy them.
