Jerry Smokin' B fired from Hot 107.9 as PD

GM Wayne Brown, who oversees Hot 107.9, confirmed that yesterday was Jerry Smokin' B's last day. He has been PD at Hot since 2000. Brown gave the standard "we decided to go in a different direction" explanation. I never knew much about Jerry. He did once tell me he purposely avoided talking to me because he didn't want to get in trouble. Anybody have any idea what's going on over at Hot?

And that was Jerry's second stint at Hot. When the station signed on in 1995, he did afternoon drive under PD Steve Hegwood, moved to Columbia, SC and then returned to Hot as PD.

Someone on the staff said she was told that Market Manager Bruce Demp is tired of being a 4 share radio station and wants to be more competitive with V-103. Demp apparently said he'll pay whatever he has to in order to get the right PD. Some of this might be coming from Radio One programming chief Jay Stevens.

The "upgrade" began a few weeks ago when midday personality Ramona Debreaux was replaced by this guy Pezo, who tells listeners he's doing his show from his house and actually walks around the station in his bathrobe.

I applaud Demp's attempt to be more competitive, and maybe he can succeed to an extent. But V's signal is vastly superior to Hot's, giving Hot an uphill climb. And of course V's personalities are stars, and V has the real heritage. Another thing going against Hot is V's broad demo appeal. Hot might do better really focusing on 18-34 and going all out for that demo. I don't see them taking much over 34 away from V.

This will be interesting to watch. Big Sexy (Bill Black) HOT's current APD is now serving as PD for the moment, but I wouldn't be suprised if he becomes the official PD. I believe Jerry Smokin B is the reason him and Pezo are here at HOT since they all worked together at HOT 103.9/WHXT in Columbia,SC. Remember, when Jerry left WHTA years ago middayer Princess Ivori and mixer Harold Banks all jumped ship with him, interesting too. With all eyes aiming at Big Sexy possibly becoming PD I wonder if DJ Doc will get the APD stripes or even PD since he was recently PD at POWER 107.1/WFXM in Macon.

If Bruce Demp and Wayne Brown or even Jay Stevens thinks firing Ramona Debraux and Jerry Smokin B will fix HOT's rating problems they have a loooong way to go. Strike 1 is letting Pezo take over middays with that horrible "Radio Vision" show. A female midday jock is usually the best fit for Urban stations. Im sure Porsche Foxx at V103 will probably have triple HOT's midday numbers. Strike 2 is E-Fa-Real in the afternoons at HOT competing with veteran Ryan Cameron, what a joke! Problem is most of HOT's strongest jocks have all jumped ship or in other time slots.

IMO, the best thing HOT 107.9 has going is A-Team Morning Show, Durrty Boyz 6pm-10pm and Gangsta Grillz Show 10pm-12am. However, HOT 107.9 has lots of street presence so hopefully that will keep them floating until some major retooling is done.
