Jerry Williams : " A Child's Christmas in Wales"

Would hope that WRKO or some other station would consider playing Jerry Williams great recording of Dylan Thomsas' " A Child Christmas in Wales."

It is a classic that should be played every year.

Just my take....but it appears the current management of WRKO has no interest in nostalgia.

I agree. It would be nice if someone like Morgan White, Jr. would play it on his show on Saturday or if he does the whole weekend on WBZ Weekend Live. I know that Jerry Williams was at WRKO but he also was a WBZ. Time for the local broadcasting industry to grow up. They still won't mention another station. The networks got over that years ago but not the provincial nimrods in Boston. All and all a shame if someone doesn't rediscover one of Jerry's best works

One of Jerry's daughters is a friend of mine, she says Alan Tolz runs the website. She said she has asked him to put it back up and running but he has not responded.

Alan at last check worked for WRKO and left Marlin some time ago. Believe Marlin were the Tanger owned stations.

Alan is a good friend of Morgan White, Jr. Would think he could get the tape of Jerry's " A Child's Christmas in Wales" if WBZ wouldn't stop the use of Jerry's voice on WBZ since it was probably recorded at WRKO ...under previous 'RKO owners.

Here's an idea.

Find out who owns the rights, if anyone, to Wiliiams' reading of ACCIW. FWIW, WRKO has it playing-on-demand on its web site.
Have them package it up, and pitch it to stations to play, and see if anyone agrees to, and under what terms. That's kinda been how it's worked for around one hundred years. If you're counting on divine intervention to get it aired, you're probably in in a long wait.

As strange as it may seem to believe, not every decision in Boston radio is made, first and foremost, with the primary
purpose of screwing Jerry Williams and Jordan Rich.

TSB

You might get away with running some of it under fair use, but it was recorded at an AFTRA shop by a guy under a (large) personal services contract so it's not a public domain thing.

Astounding that people who are in and have been in the business, or are wannabes, would suggest it's okay to use someone's work just because you feel like it.

If someone really wanted to run it, Jerry's children are pretty easy to find, we can assume that any copyright has long expired and the Estate owns the rights.

I'd be more than Happy to reach out to the family if someone was serious about wanting to run it.

I'm going to send a link to this thread over to one of his daughters right now....

Know that Eve aka Taylor Morgan has been behind the idea for years to get her father's recording of "A Child's Christmas in Wales" played every Christmas.
Sirius should have a "Sirius Jerry"channel.
His repeats would be better than the crap on talk radio today.

"Jeepers, there's nothing I'd rather do than listen to someone read Dylan Thomas on Christmas," said nobody ever.

Of course, like every other thread of yours, this is just a long, torturous circumlocution to take a shot at those Philistines who program and run talk radio. That must be the case, since nothing else in this tale of woe makes any sense.

You have a dramatic reading, by a former celebrity, of a public domain memoire. Assuming you, and she, are not looking to get compensated for it, why not do with everyone else has to do, shop it around? This ain't exactly rocket surgery.

I used to earn a living selling radio programming, so here's how its done, and you have the technological resources available that makes it a lot easier than it was 25 years ago. First, put the reading up on Youtube (or use Toltz's site) as your 'demo tape" and distribution medium. Now, thanks to cell phones, you can call EVERY radio station in the United States, FOR FREE, and pitch it to them. Start with every station in Boston, and then run a expanding circle to all over New England, and then the entire country. Since you don't want to get paid, and have no advertisers, you don't need affidavits. It is a friction-free transaction for any station, requiring only a tech or intern to pull it down.

And why pitch it just to talk stations? The country is loaded with music stations which give the talent a day or two off and just run Christmas music. Plugging in 20 minutes of ACCIW doesn't really break format. In Boston, why not call Morgan White yourself and see if he can run it on the overnight while he takes a coffee and rest room break. If nobody has pitched it to him, your chances of having him run it are, give or take a zero, zero. This may not be his month to read minds.

Now, if you haven't already tried this, well, somebody got cards they ain't showing, or just likes to complain. It's a little bit late in the game to start now, but you may want to put together your pitch kit and give it a shot next October/November. Or, or course, you could not try to get stations to carry it and then next year come back and tell us how those Philistines at those conservative talk stations just don't 'get it.'

This gets tiresome.

I believe you actually have a radio program.

Why don't you play it? Or bounce it off of your station management?

Maybe though some Stan Freberg Christmas comedy is shorter..Was being a bit sarcastic. As for nostalgia RKO does the whole big 68 bit on Saturday nights, probably brokered. And now let's go to Jerry Williams with "If I had to do it all over again I'd pick more daisies".
