Jersey Guys nailed for being anti-Latino

Carton & Rossi do PM drive on New Jersey 101.5. All this week they've been encouraging listeners to snitch on undocumented immigrants. The Jersey Guys' stunt has angered Latino groups, which in turn could lead to pickets and/or advertiser boycotts.

For their Limbaugh-like antics these Michael Savage wannabes made the front page of The Record this morning.

Im on the DJ's Side 101.5 is olne of the best stations in the area.

REPORT THE ILLEGALS!!!

I say report them too. Enough is enough already with this "p.c" dribble. What would life be like if we were all appeased day in and day out? Quite mundane really. Perhaps the illegals would know that one of the greatest things about this country is that we have the right to say what we want to say without fear of reprecussion. As the old line goes "If you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen". Maybe life would be less offensive in latin america. Good job Jersey Guys!!

Hey genius, it hasn't just been "all this week", they started this thing about 2 months ago. And the term "snitch" is a bit ridiculous. "Snitching" is when you turn in someone you know. Turning in random illegals is not snitching, its doing your job as an American.

I'm glad Carton and Rossi did this, and I'm glad this is getting some press, because we as a country really need to discuss this topic openly. The "racist" tag gets thrown around WAY too easily and its good to see Carton standing up to these race baiting pieces of crap like like the Assemblyman who is making an issue of this. And this isn't some weird/stupid "shock jock stunt". Of course Carton has done that before (Ryan Seacrest imposter), but THIS "La Cuca Gotcha" thing should not be written off as radio guys just trying to get press. Millions of people feel exactly like Carton does. We don't want Illegals here. Its pretty basic.

But of course, some nickel and dime politician wants to play the race card and use this whole thing as a way to get his name out there as a last ditch effort to save their job. It's not gonna happen.

By the way, the Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage comparisons are totally off-base and just validates the fact that you have no idea what you're talking about and probably never heard "The Jersey Guys" until today.

That's not racist. Just looking at what they're asking proves it. They aren't trying to "get" all Hispanics. Just the ones who are breaking the law. It's your civic duty to report any crime. This just happens to be one crime they're concentrating on.

The Assemblynut is failing to do his job. He swore to uphold the law, did he not? Or did that get phased out of the swearing-in ceremony at some point?

I worked with Craig when he was at WNEW, and he's a great guy. I also think this is a great way to get publicity for both the show, and the issue of illegal immigration.

For the listeners, however, who are ready to report the friendly neighborhood "illegals"...how exactly do you know, without actually demanding to see their green cards, that they are illegal?

The only way one can be certain that someone is illegal is knowing definitively that they do not have the proper identification and paperwork, and the only way you're going to know that is if you're in law enforcement or are an employer. Anything else is racism, not a genuine concern about the residency status of any particular person.

My name is Sanchez...but I'm not even Hispanic. I'm a 5th generation American who's ancestors came here from the Netherlands. My name does not give you a hint about my lineage or naturalization status. The only way you can know for sure...is to have a legal reason to ask for my identification.

Ginny, if you are going to post, it's not a good idea to do so with the WMTR calls attached to your name. Greater Media policy allows employees to post, but as private citizens, not as WMTR employees. It's a good way to end up unemployed.

hmm. thanks for the head's up; I hadn't realized that information gets posted right next to my name when I was filling out my ID information (as you can see from my posting stats, I'm very new to the board).

If I post it's always as a "private citizen" as I'd never think to post an opinion as something other than my own personal thoughts on a topic.

Joey you've got a valid point, but I'm not confusing the two and understand the difference (and I didn't say "anti-Latino" anywhere, I just used my own personal experience as an example of what I was trying to convey about assumptions); my concern is regarding people who don't understand the inherent difference between "looking" and "being" or who assume that the majority of one group or another are illegal. Assumptions can lead to intolerance. That is my sole concern on the topic.

The best way to deal with illegal immigration continues to be tighter controls at the borders (write to your elected official and demand that they address this!), ID checks by employers and ID checks when obtaining a driver's license. The average citizen simply has no way to know for sure who is, and is not, illegal. We don't have a means to legally demand identification from our neighbors.

This whole issue is quite serious and humorous at the same time.
Hosts of a RADIO show are doing a SHOW. With THEIR opinions based on what THEY know.
Callers can give THEIR opinions just like anyone else. Where else can this be done? Nowhere Man.

We ALL know that employers need cheap labor. Gone are the days when high school and college kids even
want to run the rides at the boardwalk. THAT would cut into their video game, text messaging, IM-ing, hangin' out, getting tatoos, sucking off the teet of mommy & daddy. THAT is the reason we NEED immigrant labor.
So if ANYone should be yelled at here it's employers..AND people like YOU and ME who go to restaurants who have illegals scrubbng dishes, doing our lawns, cleaning the toilets at the hotels, doing the framing of our new 3000 square foot houses, etc.. Until THAT stops, and the KIDS do what they SHOULD be doing, the illegals won't have an incentive to COME here in the first place. IF THAT'S racist, then I'll eat my shorts..and HOW DARE the Hispanic politicians parade around saying their show is this or that. If THEY would spend as much time DEALING with the illegals issue in the SENATE and ASSEMBLY, perhaps SOMETHING will be done in a positive way. But nope..not in NJ.. Let's MAKE a name for ourselves on network TV blubbering about racism. Vote the idiots..(oops..not allowed to use THAT word in NJ anymore) out of office! Pathetic.

And by the way, the subject of this thread is bogus..no one was NAILED for anything. It IS a free country to have an OPINION!!!!!!
And remember next time you think of radio..remember it's a SHOW. And YOU can participate with YOUR opinion..whether you agree or disagree. I hear SO many people say they don't listen to this guy or that girl or whoever..but they KNOW who they are..and they REMEMBER the station. THAT is all that really matters. So
Kudos to the 'boys' and management for allowing DIALOG. It's a two way street..where I found love. (**The Moments)..what a great freakin' song).

Three things that a lot of people don't mention in these forums:

1. Illegal, undocumented aliens depress wages. That includes the wages of people who took the time to get their U.S. visas and "green cards" and who came here legally.

2. Since most illegals are working "under the table" to avoid detection by the authorities, they are not paying their fair share of taxes. Meanwhile, their children attend our public schools with the blessing of the U.S. Supreme Court, draining our resources, while we who are here legally are paying confiscatory taxes to support the school system.

3. Perhaps the most important issue here is public health. Years ago, immigrants were screened at Ellis Island. If they were carrying certain diseases, such as tuberculosis, they were either quarantined or sent back to their homelands. We are seeing a resurgence of Third World diseases, such as poliomyelitis ("polio") and tuberculosis. Anyone wishing to immigrate into this country should be made to pass a health screening.

That said, a talk show can hardly solve the problem of illegal immigration. Without checking credentials, the average Joe cannot tell if someone is in the country illegally or not. None of the politicians seem willing to address this problem. The Republicans love illegal immigration, as it provides a flood of cheap labor that will work below the minimum wage. Democrats love illegal immigration, as they hope that the illegals will eventually get amnesty or be legalized. That will create a minority bloc that they hope will vote solidly Democratic. And the American worker gets screwed...

Sorry for the confusion, but my reply wasn't aimed at you but to the original post of this thread, which is entitled "Jersey Guys nailed for being anti-Latino"

What surprises me is how the folks here are discussing the actual issue of illegal immigration itself, instead of discussing how Carton and Rossi handle the issue.

I think what is going on is about the same as they have done with other ethnic groups - that is, to contribute to the stereotype. There are many people in New Jersey who when they see ANY hispanic - they automcatically think of them as an illegal immigrant. Carton and Rossi continue is their mean-spirited way to contribute to this attitude. THey did it with those of middle eastern descent when they questioned the "muslim day" at Great Adventure. They did it a few months ago with gays with a picture of a politican with a rather flamboyant rock star at his side (and they also used a steretypical slur to describe him as well).

The thing is - they're doing it in the name of entertainment and making the station money. THat's ok - but it is rather small minded, but it would seem we have a LOT of small minded people in the state of NJ who listen to them. Some of those people understand it's entertainment, but a lot don't - and take them seriously.

I'm not saying the issue isn't an important one - but the issue of illegal immigration is not the problem - it's Carton and Rossi's way of handling it that is. It's not what you say - it's how you say it. It's one thing to come out seriously and ask people to report illegal immigrants - it's quite another to call it "La Cuca Gotcha" - because that singles out hispanics and promotes a stereotype. There are a LOT of illegal immigrants in this country besides hispanics - why haven't they gone after ALL illegal immigrants?

Food for thought folks...

Here is a thought, "Just turn the dial". If you don't like the way they handle it then just listen to anyone of the many other stations out there. Let's be honest, it's a subject that won't rest and many people are honestly burned up about. You are right that all latinas are not illegal, but the vast majority come from that latin american part of the world. I'd be the first to say that an illegal Irish immigrant is just as bad as an Hispanic illegal...so yeah, maybe we do need to have an open conversation about clamping down on this. But people need to stop with the branding of Carton and Rossi as racists and biggots. I'm convinced that we might be the only country in the world who cowers to such minor groups. We see states denouncing their participation in the slave trade and slave industry, and we see states disclaiming their participation in the civil war, now we can't turn those we suspect of something in? Please give me a break.

I don't listen to them (nor do I listen to any radio now - I'm all podcasts, except for traffic reports from 101.5 when I need them) but I have an interest in media and analyzing what is going on in the media landscape.

It's funny that you say that people need to stop "branding Carton and Rossi as racists and biggots<sic>" because by condeming that - you're doing the same thing THEY do by branding all latinos as illegals. Further - I'm not saying whether they are racists or bigots - I'm merely saying that mean spirited-ness seems to run rampant on their show - and that may be indicative of the greater populace that listens to them - which is actually a pretty sad commentary on the state of society today.

Further - I was trying to take the discussion to a place of analyzing what they do as entertainers - not to debate the illegal immigrant issue itself. You need to separate the issue from the way they handle it.

JoeFromTomsRiver nailed it on the head. It is nothing more than a desperate move by Mr. Caraballo. It is nothing more than a page out of the Democrat's playbook.

I met Craig a few years ago down at Jenkinson's, and he is a pretty cool person. I side with The Jersey Guys on this one.
