My father once again has taken a turn for the worse. The nurse seems to feel he could pass any day now. He has done much better than we thought over the past few months, but we are doing our best to cope with the latest down turn.

Our family wants to thank all of you for your kind words.

Michael Cain

So sorry to hear this news, prayers for you, your dad and your family.

What a great gift Jess Cain brought to all of his listeners; the ability to help each of us start our day with a smile, or a laugh (or quite a few laughs, actually).

God gives each of us unique talents; Jess Cain clearly found out what his was and made use of it for the enjoyment of those around him. What a blessing!

Thanks to his family for sharing Jess with us over the years.

God Bless Jess Cain. I held a lot of admiration for him, admiration that grew after being able to watch him work from across the hall. It was amazing how he and Pudge communicated telepathically. They personified radio as entertainment, with timeless widespread appeal. Jess Cain was kind, dignified, and talented. May he rest in peace.

R.I.P...I remember him saying "Yaz's Day" to the tune of "Yesterday" when Yaz retired. I heard a recording of his show from Mar. of '67--some music, humor with him doing a leprechaun voice....a gentler time. 850 has gone
from Classy Cain to Dumbass and Callousman, I guess...

I’d only met Jess once or twice through the years and he was as he appeared on the air – affable and genuinely funny.

What a sad day.

Michael, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

They don't make them like they used to......Jess is one of a kind.....gone but not forgotten.

Remembering Jess

I worked with him from 1989 until he retired in 1991. Jess was a classy guy. At the time, WHDH had almost a family atmosphere. People enjoyed going to work there. I was hired by Dan Griffin right after David Mugar bought the station. Mr Mugar wanted to move the WHDH studios to the channel 7 building and he wanted a first class place. Anyone who ever worked at Stuart Street knows that towards the end the place was falling apart (smoke frequently came out of the old Mc Curdy control boards and most of the computers had Radio Shack on them). We built two air studios at Bullfinch Place: The main one and the Jess Cain studio. We did this not because Jess demanded it (after all, he didn't have his own at Stuart Street) but because we wanted to show our respect for Jess in some tangible way. The station ran on delay after Jess' show and we had set up the delay unit so the producers could surgically remove things. To do this they pushed and held a green button on the board. This button cut the delayed audio off air and instead played it through a speaker behind the producer-LOUD. That way if the stuff was coming from BEHIND them, they knew it wasn't going out over the air. There was such a speaker in each control room. We had been in the new studios perhaps a week when Jess came walking down the hall past his control room right when someone said "FU!" Just as he walked by, suddenly a LOUD "FU" came blasting out of the speaker in his empty contol room! I was walking towards Jess and the look on his face was one of horror! For that split second he thought his studio was haunted! I explained what had happened and he smiled-almost as if the joke was on him.

I was there Jess' last day at Top of the Hub. It was a good day-everyone who was anyone in Boston came. Grant Moulason hovered in the helicopter 50 feet from the building and waved to Jess. I remember laughing a lot that day. After the broadcast was over and my crew and I were packing up the remote broadcast equipment (Engineers are always the first to get there and the last to leave), I remember feeling like somehow tomorrow wasn't going to be the same . Somehow it wasn't going to be as funny, as enjoyable because Jess wouldn't be driving me in to work any more.

I feel the same way today......In some ways, Jess is like the ocean. Most of us don't go to the beach, but it's reassuring to know that it's there. Even though Jess has been off the air for a while and I'm over 3000 miles away from Boston, it was reassuring to know that this good man was still there. Now he isn't and the world is just a bit worse off for it.

Godspeed Jess! I and thousands of others will miss you!

Dana Puopolo

My one and only experience with Mr. Cain was when he called during the short-lived Janet Jeghelian (sp?) night time show when I was screening, and he told me not to say who he was and to just put him through. I let him on the air as (I think "jeff") and he proceeded to goof on Janet for quite some time before identifying himself. IIRC he was calling to wish her well on the new show.

Class act.

He's obviously already missed by so many.

My thoughts are with his family today.

Celebrate his life. He brought joy to many more than will ever be able to relay here in this forum.

Jess was COOL. Jess was a hero and an influence. Our thoughts and hearts are with him and his family from the broadcasters of Seattle, WA (this is how far his influence has spread....)

Thank you Jess Cain....

Is Dana Puopolo in LA now?

(Did someone have an ampliphase transmitter that needed to be kept running?)

;-)

Is there a number or email you can be reached at?

Jess was the best. He and Leo Egan were great together.

How is the hall of fame thing going?

Also, can somebody give us the website with airchecks from Jess. I think it is New England air checks or something like that. Thanks all, and our thoughts are with his family.

I want to thank everyone for their kind words. There has been a change in the memorial service. Because we are not having a wake or funeral, the family needs closure so the service in Hingham Sat 2/23 will be for family, friends, and invited guests. A public memorial will be held later in the spring at a larger venue.

I hope all of his wonderful fans understand that this is a difficult time and that we appreciate their cooperation.
