Jesse Jackson, Others Challenging WNYW/WWOR Duopoly Renewal

Four groups, including Jesse Jackson's Rainbow PUSH Coalition, are challenging the license renewals of both WNYW/5 in New York and sister station WWOR/9, which is licensed to Secaucus, NJ:

Run Jesse, Run!!

Do it, do it, do it!!

In the digital age, TV duopolies must -- and should -- come to an end. I would be very happy to see someone else take over channel 9 and return it to respectability.

I get the funny feeling that, by the time they finally snatch Channel 9 from FOX, that there won't be a Channel 9 to operate in because the FCC would succeed in snatching more spectrum from broadcasters. Alternatively, FOX could sell Channel 9 to CBS or Tribune just to get Sharpton/Jackson off their backs.

Be careful what you wish for.

CBS owns 3 AMs and 3 FMs plus WCBS-TV could they own another TV station in NY?

As per my post, I'm against duopolies. But if there had to be another one, whomever it is has to be better than Fox in running the station (and the other second stations among Fox-owned pairs). I think CBS would have room for one more station in New York, as I believe the FCC limits companies to eight broadcast holdings in large markets (still way too much).

Here's the stats when it comes to CBS' holdings in markets where they already have a television duopoly:
Los Angeles: two TVs, five FMs and two AMs (KFWB, one of the AMs, is in a trust while it awaits a possible sale).
Philadelphia: two TVs, three AMs and two FMs
Boston: two TVs, one AM and four FMs
San Francisco: two TVs, two AMs and four FMs
Pittsburgh: two TVs, one AM and three FMs
Dallas-Fort Worth: two TVs, one AM and five FMs
Detroit: two TVs, two AMs and four FMs
Sacramento-Stockton: two TVs, one AMs and four FMs

CBS owns no radio stations in Miami-Fort Lauderdale, home to their other TV duopoly. However they do control one AM and four FMs in the neighboring West Palm Beach market.

Purely political. If the owner isn't Fox, there's no challenge. Period.

No.

The issue is that Fox owns both a TV duopoly and a newspaper in the same market. There have been challenges against Tribune in Hartford for the same reason.

Who's to say they won't move the entire wwor tv linup including mynet primetime over to a subchannel of wnyw tv 5 then sell wwor tv which by then will be an empty vessel.

One thing I have noticed about WWOR is that their 11pm newscast seems to be covering a lot more NJ news compared to the other NYC stations. There was even a billboard on I-280 in Newark over the summer with a NJ slogan.

Isn't WWOR already pretty much an empty vessel, essentially filled with junk and castoffs that Fox doesn't want to run on WNYW? Selling off WWOR without it being encumbered by those programming committments impresses me as being an opportunity for any potential buyer, and not a disadvantage.

I don't know where you get the junk and castoffs the only shows that air on both stations during the week are wendy williams and peoples court the criticism of wwor tv is lack of local programming and too many infomercials especially on weekends.

I remember when Fox bought WWOR many of the top syndicated shows on WWOR moved on over to WNYW while less performing shows moved to WWOR.

This was a station that's main local program in its heyday was Million Dollar Movie. Come on.

Let's bring back MCA, and run old episodes of The Morton Downey Jr. Show, The Howard Stern Show and The Richard Bey Show for a while. I'll even throw in The Joe Franklin Show, Straight Talk, Bowling For Dollars and Kiner's Korner for good measure.

Yeah, that was that brief moment when they were "Universal 9"...and then Universal moved on and bought NBC...and decided they'd run it like they ran Channel 9. Anyone else seeing a trend here? :)

WWOR is on the subchannel of WNYW (and vice versa).
