Jesus Christ Superstar Wins Easter, Idol Slumping Badly

American Idol faltered, badly, against NBC's live Jesus Christ Superstar on Easter. As the article makes clear, ABC is footing the bill for the outsize salaries being paid to Katy Perry and Ryan Seacrest and the return is, to put it mildly, underwhelming thus far.

While it won the night handily, Superstar did lag other successful live musicals and, as a result, might not lead the networks to reconsider these projects as some have been cancelled.

This probably makes the news worse of Idol though. Instead of faltering against really strong material, it did so against material that was decent, but not great, thereby making the case that the Idol revival might just be best left as a one and done.

That's not exactly what the article says. Perry makes what Jennifer Lopez made. Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan are making substantially less.
 
A 6.1 rating, or 9.4 million viewers is considered a blow out, I take it.

Here's the direct quote from the article:

"ABC Television President Ben Sherwood is facing increased pressure after handing out gigantic salaries to the stars of "Idol,” including an astronomical $25 million for Perry. “If ‘Idol’ doesn’t work, it will blow up big time in Sherwood’s face,” a source told the Post. "

How, exactly do you square that with your assertion, "That's not exactly what the article says"?!? Please be specific and articulate your rationale. One thing the article didn't mention was Jennifer Lopez's salary. If you're going to add these things, it would be nice if you'd source them.

It doesn't say "ABC is footing the bill." ABC had to approve the budget. Approving the budget isn't the same as footing the bill.

According to the producers, the budget isn't any larger than any similar show. As I indicated, they spent more for Katy, but spent less for the other judges.

It says the ABC President is under pressure after handing out 'gigantic' salaries, so it basically says exactly that ABC is footing the bill. If ABC wasn't, why would the ABC President be under pressure for the salaries? You're clearly off base on this one, probably just better if you'd concede the point.

Still see no sourcing for Lopez' salary.
