JFK and KOL

Hello! I've been collecting a few "where were you" memories for a JFK feature to air Friday on KOMO Newsradio. An older gentlemen told me he heard the news of the shooting on KOL in Seattle.

He also said he believed KOL was the first radio station outside Dallas to broadcast the bulletin.

Can anyone confirm this? Many thanks?

ABC Radio first

KOMO would have aired the first radio bulletin in the Northwest. The ABC Network was the first of the major media to get the bulletin out. With the very limited communications and the fact that KOL was not a network station at the time, I doubt that KOL was even close to being first at any of it.

Well, not necessarily. CBS and NBC also had affiliates in Seattle in 1963. The other issue here is that even in 1963, news did travel fast. KOL may have caught something from the networks and broadcast it. I really don't know. Someone who was intimately involved at the time may have the answer.

However, I found this KOMO clip fascinating. Some have speculated this is Art McDonald, but I'm not sure. The look is definitely 1950's, but this was "on the street" in '63.
