I looked in the "Unabsurd Radio Dictionary" and the definition for "retire" just has a reference to "pursuing new opportunities" and something about "we wish him/her well in his future endeavors".

That's unfortunate, Jhani has done a wonderful job at KRTH!

Bob Hamilton would be a perfect replacement! ;D

Don't those two phrases usually mean "told to resign or be fired"?

Add in "Philosophical differences..." and you have the statements generally associated with "we agreed to disagree".

That covers anything from "we are not renewing your contract" to "I don't want to renew the contract unless you give me more money". It does not necessarily mean that there is anything negative about a person's performance... but it's just part of the language of "they aren't here any more" of radio.

Same in the print media, David. One of the papers I've worked at advised a drunk (and, it was rumored, a groper) to leave the building or be terminated. He left, and the bulletin board notice used both the "opportunities" and "endeavors" cliches. Much dark newsroom humor ensued about the "opportunities" he might find and the "endeavors" they'd include.

um....maybe Jhani Kaye knows something about KRTH that no one else does yet? Happened kinda that way when Harry Harrison retired in NY... :)
