The biggest problem with this triopoly is that they have a sales staff selling Accounts in Thousand Oaks/ Westlake Village that will be heard in the O.C. and VICE-VERSA. They've always used second rate (and presumably cheaper) consulting and it shows in their playlists over the years. It used to be a place for big-time LA talent to hibernate for a while while they sent out resumes hoping to get back in the fray. I spent 2 years there under those conditions. Anyone hoping to be paid commensurate with their experience is looking for a rude awakening when applying. Bad signal, bad programming and idiot owners make for bad radio.

I'm sorry to hear this. I worked for Joe Amaturo at WFTL Fort Lauderdale in the '70's and it was a fantastic experience! We were 1,000 watts that sounded like 50,000. The music was MOR and the approach was personality in all dayparts. We had a large staff with a diverse background, and a strong news department. The PD was Michael O'Shea fresh from KLIF Dallas. He brought a lot of excitement and fun to WFTL.

I've heard the music on Jill and I must say that I like it. For the record I'm 57 with a broad range of music that I enjoy.

I liked all the songs (or most of them) that JILL plays... back in the day....
I also have a broad taste in my music preferences. JILL plays stuff that even KRTH plays (or played); KOST for sure; KBIG for sure; JACK, KLOS and KSWD some classic rock; they probably even play songs that KIIS-FM or AMP might play also KROQ and KYSR, and The Wave (have I left anyone out besides Urban?). The point I've made in the past is that this is a mish mosh hybrid of music that will appeal to few when mixed together. Its not classic rock. Its not classic hits. Its not adult hits. Its not smooth jazz vocals. Its not oldies. Its not AC. Its not Hot AC. Its not Urban gold. Its not modern rock. Its all of these in a blender minus the Frog .... Oh wait they play Lee Greenwood and Shania Twain among others.

This is a niche signal deserving a niche format that serves those not being served (read iPod users, Internet radio listeners, Satellite users, Music Choice listeners, Indie rock fans, adult alternative fans). And there's that great 128kbps stream available for in office listening anywhere. There's a hole out there still needing to be filled. Despite the signal limitations, if you build it and play it, they will come.

I have to agree. Amaturo did a terrific job of making WFTL a great radio station in that era, and O'shea did an amazing job. And look at what Amaturo did with Froggy in the IE, and even WPOP in Hartford with Doc Holiday... a good broadcaster spanning four decades!
 
Hey David, for once you and I agree on something :)

WFTL was even more amazing on the inside. I loved coming to work every single day. If O'Shea had told me to play turntable felt I would have done it. If that sounds like hero worship it is. Mike went on to become group PD for all the Golden West stations. He deserved even more, a super motivator.

Listening to Jill I would say I really like the randomness and unpredictability of the format. We don't have anything quite like it where I live.

I guess what matters most comes down to is the format sellable. I'll leave that one to David who knows more about that than I do.

Hey!!! Did anyone her the new DJ on JILL FM this morning? I did. The thing is that he nevered said what his name was...
 
Because of all this talk here on Jill, I decided to play it in the store at work today and I gotta say, it's a pretty good station for work. The music variety, even though it's all over there, makes it great for background store music. However, i don't think it would be a station I would listen to in the car while commuting.
 
but if you are a 57 year old male with a broad range of music you enjoy, the station is missing. Visotcky claimed the 37 year old female as his bullseye for the market....not my words...his....you are not the target demo. Great that you like....not who Bobby wanted though.
 
OMG! Who was that doing the awful pseudo 'live' voice tracks this morning on Jill? He sounded like the janitor or one of the owner's relatives. I was traveling down the freeway this morning in the 6:00 hour with a car full of ride share friends. Granted, they are sales and marketing people not programmers. But we all laughed our heads off. The guy might have been OK on a classical station. Not Jill. Not if they are serious about being a contender. I believe I heard the same guy doing a few breaks over the Labor Day weekend. Maybe it was last Friday about 6:00 in the evening. In fact it might have been the exact same voice track word for word. He said if you are planning a Bar B Q for the weekend, be careful of the fire danger. Is anyone thinking about the weekend at 6:00 on a Wednesday morning? Just plain awful radio. It reminded me of the talent you would hear in the middle of nowhere USA. Isn't this Los Angeles?
 
I heard the voicetrack this morning also. I guess three months into the Bobby V. experiemtn, I hear what he is saying the direction is....I just don't see the actual movement in that direction.
 
The JILL-FM signal (OC transmitter) is gone this morning so far in Orange County. I just called them and they did not seem to be aware of the problem. Engineers must be working on the stick.
 
The guy I heard on Wednesday morning wasn't Tom Watson. I know that for a fact. The audio sounded like crap yesterday afternoon. It was distorted beyond belief and virtually impossible to listen to for even one song. Of course, I tried for several songs until my ride share partners said enough. I almost had a mutiny on my hands, females included.
 
I noticed that the KAJL-FM transmitter was just throwing up a carrier with no audio yesterday afternoon September 12th. Have they fixed the problem yet?

I could not even begin to guess what that means, but it's not really the point. Visotcky wants 37 year old women as his audience but is programming to a much older crowd.
