Jill Quale hired by WJBR

I have a good friend who is a client of WJBR. He told me he was called by his account rep Friday afternoon with the news that Jill will start sometime this week. She will be on with Michael Waite in the morning. The other part of the news is that Valerie Mack was let go Friday afternoon. I don't know if that means Jill will be doing the news or if somebody else is being hired to do that.

I understand the hiring of Jill Quale, she has such a built in fan base in Delaware from her many years
at WSTW. That said, Jill Quale is nothing more than a card reader and giggler, and will really add
nothing more to the show than just a name.

My question: Why let Valorie Mack go, who has been with WJBR for 15 years, in favor of someone who is
less talented, just because she is a name? If Valorie is looking to remain in the area, I think she'd be
a great fit at WDEL, although her position at WJBR sounds an awful lot like Nancy Rawdin, and I don't
think DBC is willing to part with her just yet.

One would hope that 15 years with a company would warrant more than a one day notice. Even for
radio, that seems a bit low class to me. Jill Quale deserved better, and so did Valorie.

Wise man once said "In the radio "biz", you DON'T get a notice when the hatchet falls. The longer you work at a place, the worse the kick out the door is."

Apparently the guy doing WJBR news this week is just a marketing staffer filling in. Perhaps we will see if they have a new news person when the new "Mike & Jill" morning team debuts on Thursday.... or we may just have to wait a bit for that slot to be filled.

I agree with you in some respects. Not many of us have gone our careers in radio without getting the can at some point. (I've gotten in once myself..)

Still, for those who have worked at DBC at any point in the last 10 years or so, the personalities are management were pretty tightly knit, and it felt like a (slightly disfunctional) family. I guess with the new PD in place, that atmosphere is slowly starting to crumble, and that is truly sad.

Even though I'm not the biggest fan of her on-air work, Jill is a great person, and she will be a fantastic addition to WJBR and their morning show. I would expect solid gains over WSTW in the next book.

Jill did the "news" breaks, so apparetly there will be no news person and Valorie was canned to make room for Jill on the WJBR payroll.

I imagine that Jill will increase WJBR's male listenership. To me, the WJBR morning show, and the station in general, has always seemed targeted to women. I mean, come on, I don't know of any guys who want to constantly hear Michael Bolton's spleen-ripping rendition of "When a Man Loves a Woman."

It always seemed to me that the DBC experience varied based on what building you worked out of...not unlike the Clear Channel experience (at least from folks I've known who've worked for CC).

With all the chaos going on these days, it makes me kinda happy to be out of the Wilmington market now.

For the last 10 or so years, Clear Channel Delaware has thought they were the center of the Wilmington radio universe, although the numbers that they put up prove otherwise.

You walk in to that building and you would think each daypart carries a 25 share and has never heard of WJBR or WSTW...

Then again, maybe they haven't...it's hard to look that far up the ladder and see anything when you're on the bottom of the pile.
