Jillian Barberie to join John Phillips on KABC Weekdays 12-3pm

I find it interesting that shortly after KFI announced that Mark Thompson and Elizabeth Espinosa would team up for a 1-to-3 pm program, KABC announced that they, too, would have a male-and-female team in early afternoons. Coincidence? Or was KABC's decision made hastily in reaction to KFI's decision? And it was two years ago when Terri-Rae Elmer left KFI for KABC. What do it all mean?

Christ, KABC is as pathetic as it's line-up. Jillian has a voice that is as pleasant to listen to as nails on a chalkboard. Don't get me wrong, she once had her visual cheesecake days but in radio she'll be an complete tune out. John Phillips has a whole 'nother laundry list of negatives. Cumulus should just sell the 790 stick and let it flip to a foreign language and be done with it. The 50 people that tune in to KABC are likely deaf anyways and couldn't tell the difference.

If this disaster lasts the Summer book, I'll eat a bug.

In the most recent Nielsen Audio ratings, KABC ranked 38th with a 0.5% audience share, right in between KLAC (0.6) and KFWB (0.3). "Behold, how the mighty have fallen."

Rob, would you like fries with your bug? :)

She is an instant tune-out even on TV where, in theory, she should have more positive attributes. But none of them can make up for sheer annoyance. I always felt sorry for Steve Edwards.

I agree she is really annoying and arrogant. I am kind of glad to she how far she has fallen from her throne!

The show is sort of annoying and I've only been able to take about 15 minutes at a time, which is about the time they seem to focus on a single topic before moving to a new one. The one thing I have noticed is that John is trying too hard to take positions opposite her. I guess to keep the 15 minutes entertaining, he's gotta try and come up with something. Also he definitely seems like he's been told to mellow down from his previous incarnation of an Ann Coulter droid.

In his syndicated radio column today, Richard Wagoner noted that both KFI and KABC are "live and local" during daytime hours and are "moving away from the political talk." He added, "For the first time in years, there is actual competition between the two talkers." In the latest Nielsen Audio ratings, KFI was tied for 9th with a 3.1 share and KABC ranked 37th with a 0.5. I'll be awaiting the next few months' ratings to see if that "actual competition" boosts KABC's audience share.

Sixty-Four KFI has certainly been on a ratings freefall as of late but if Wagoner thinks KFI and KABC as spurring competition he obviously hasn't been in the game long enough to make any valid opinion. KABC still hasn't rebounded from the death of Paul Harvey and that great man has been fossilized to the point of becoming amber. KFI does have some rocky waters ahead. The new clockwheel for Handel's show is all wrong now. I use to drive into work hearing Handel on the News: Late Edition from 8:30 to 9. Now that is bumped to the 9 o'clock hour. What I'm left with in the 8 o'clock hour is Handel's "editorial" segments. Not nearly as much fun as Hoffman chiming in as the Queen Mum or Hubert Grubler, the German handler of Justin Beiber's monkey and other assorted nonsense. My drive to work listening to KFI is now less fun since the change.

Those newspaper folks miss the importance of signal. This is a "competition" of a flashlight against a searchlight. Game over.

David is correct. KABC was once owned by the founder of KFI, Earle C Anthony, and was known as KECA. It was the 5000 watt Blue network affiliate backup to 50,000 Red network KFI in the NBC Red/Blue days. The Roosevelt administration broke up NBC and multi-station combos in 1944, but the differential still exists. Multi-station ownership is now allowed again and the real comparison of interest is whether the new KEIB 1150, Patriot Radio, will pull ahead of KABC between now and November. KEIB reportedly has 50,000 watts as well but not with the same unrestricted output as sister station KFI. Still, it is 10 times that of KABC and 5the two Clear Channel stations share the same news, traffic, marketing and sales departments.

KABC is just like WPHT in philly in many ways. Agree? Low ratings, etc
