I remember Jim Avila in the 1990's he was a reporter for both KNBC and NBC News at the same time whenever the Network needed segments from Los Angeles. Then he moved to ABC News doing segments for World News Tonight, 20/20 and Good Morning America in the 2000's. After his time with ABC he retired for awhile before he became a contributor for KGTV San Diego and Scripps news.

I still recall his tenure at CBS 2 (WBBM Chicago), as well as his 20/20 and ABC National days. Funny that I don't recall his ABC 7 (WLS Chicago) days, but I remember watching him on CBS 2, thinking his style felt more WLS-TV than WBBM-TV (in a good way). RIP Jim!

The News 4 family is mourning the loss of a nationally known veteran journalist who spent years as a senior correspondent for ABC News. Jim Avila passed away at age 70 after a lengthy illness.

Avila is the brother of News 4 I-Team reporter Jaie Avila. In fact, Jaie donated a kidney to his brother in 2018 when Jim's kidneys started to fail.

Jim was an outstanding reporter. He inspired me to get into the news business and in many other areas of my life. He won just about every award there is, but he was especially proud of being inducted into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame during a ceremony here in San Antonio in 2019," explained Jaie.
