Jim Axel is Dead

This was something we had been waiting on.. Its a sad Saturday indeed... I hate to hear this.. Jim was a legend and was someone if you grew up in the 70s like me , you could hear that voice and know it was NEWS.
R.I.P. My friend.. You will be missed.

A great news legend indeed in Atlanta. Prayers to his family during this time-I still remember, as a grade
school kid back in the 70's, watching him, Chuck Moore and Guy Sharpe on Channel 5. He always did his
work with such professionalism.

The piece they showed on Fox 5 of him recently at his home in Florida was a great tribute. His home had a great view and now he has the best view of all. He was a giant in the house of Storer.

WAGA did a great tribute this morning on the Sunday news. They had current employees who worked with Jim do taped rememberences of Jim. It was a fitting tribute.

I am a 62 year old native of Atlanta and a former broadcaster.
Jim Axel was a big part of this area for 34 years.
He will always be missed.

I first met Mr. Axel back in the days of the Georgia Association of Newscasters and we were in a meeting in Athens. He spent a great deal of time with this kid doing news and everything else at powerful 1000 watt daytimer in south Georgia. A great journalist and human being...He is missed.

Rodney has a great piece about Jim on his blog. It includes thoughts from Mark Shavin, Axel's long time producer, and it's a great read if you're a fan of Jim.(There is a link to click on to get the full Shavin piece - if you have a minute or two read it.)

We hardly knew ye, Jim........

When I first got into broadcasting in the early 60's, a group of us novices would sit around and judge air-talent, as if we were experts! Jim Axel, who did the midday news on WSB radio was always considered the best newscaster in the city.
A few years later It saddened us to learn that he was moving over to the boob-tube. On radio...and on TV...Jim was a real Pro.

One time I had jury duty in DeKalb County and they had an orientation/instructional video for the jurors featuring Jim Axel, long after he had retired from daily TV.

He will be missed. He had a delivery that was at once serious but easy to listen to.
