Jim Braude and Margery Egan - Big Success on Boston Public Radio After One Year

O

Omnibus

Although some CEO's in commercial radio were rooting for them to fail after TKK Egan and Braude have turned out to be a great success and appointment radio Monday- Friday 12-2 on WGBH 89.7.

Funny, those that failed after TKK were all the right wingers - Michael Graham, Jay Severin (o) etc. Gone! Never to be heard from again ?

Happy 1'st Anniversary to Egan and Braude.

What standard are we using?

What constitutes "success" in your opinion?

What standard are we judging "failure" ?

I am not claiming they are a failure or anything else...

You are the one claiming them to be a "big success". Please back it up.

Just personal taste/opinion? Because they are Liberal?

Because you happen to like them?

They are a success because they are a good team and they don't break the cardinal rule of good talk radio as promulgated by The Dean Of Talk Radio - " Never be boring or predictable...". Too many who think they are good at talk are - boring and very predictable and that applies equally to the Left and the Right.

Jay Severin is on the Blaze talk radio (Net). Graham is on a network of stations run by Money Matters. Prog talkers like Jeff Santos, Steph Miller, Ed Schultz (at least on radio), Thom Harrtmann are the ones who are gone, but apparently Boston isn't a big liberal town :) Or, maybe prog talk can best be found on powerful public radio stations. Why try 1510 when you have 89.7 and 90.9, and yes they ARE doing well.

Of course fans of classical, jazz, folk, and blues were a bit disappointed when those types of music were dropped by the NPR
stations in favor of news-talk but that's where THEIR revenue comes from. Yes, GBH bought CRB and now runs them, but now there's one classical station, not two. That's about to happen in Santa Barbara as KCRW is buying KDB and putting news-talk and other stuff on the 88.7 there (removing classical) but keeping classical on 93.7 KDB. One less classical station.
In Pittsburgh, WQED-FM is trimming their staff but doing what they can to keep classical on; WDUQ dumped jazz in favor of news-talk-NPR (now WESA) but a station in nearby W. Virginia is trying to replace the jazz lost by THAT move.

I will agree with Omnibus that E&B have their followers and probably put out a good product, for those who may lean that way. (Eagan is a bit of a moderate in some respects on the Herald staff...)

Jay Severin , born James Severino, lied about his education as well as his name. He is also a racial bigot. When Deval Patrick came on the scene and first appeared on WTKK in the segment called "Ask The Governor", this racial bigot who both lied about his education - said he had a PhD when he did not - lied that he was a swinging bachelor when he had a wife - at the time - and several children - lied that his name wasn't really James Severino - this same person called the segment " AXE the Governor" as if Deval Patrick used the dipthong distortion to pronounce "Ask" as AXE". Severino also called Hilary Clinton a whore and a pig.... That guy. Is that how you lean and it that what you prefer over Egan and Braude. Well, you must be just like Jay Severin aka James Severino.

Well he certainly had a rocky relationship with some newspaper writers re: his name and private life (referring to Scot Lehigh of the Globe as "Scat He-Lies" and I told about how he hid the fact that he was married and had a daughter despite a kind of swingin' single persona. When he started his short lived syndie show someone asked him about his family and a haughty Jay replied, "I don't know what you're talking about!" Yeah there are lots of people who take stage names, and admittedly sometimes they want something easier to spell or even hide their ethnicity... including the great Jerry Williams, born Gerald Jacoby. You must admit "Soupy Sales" is catchier than "Milton Hines"; that singer George Ivan Morrison wanted to simply be VAN Morrison, and so on. Severin chops off a syllable of his real last name this way.

Yeah Axe the Governor was a racist thing to say! (He also referred to Jane Swift as "our girl governor", though that was a bit milder). I do remember the PhD thing, and also the day when Don Imus berated him at a Kiss Me I'm Imus
event, leading to a priceless pic in the Globe that's prob still online somewhere (Jay cowering behind the dais)

I don't know if James Severino and his wife the former Renee Klock have several children, may just be one....I do remember the Hillary stuff, too. I don't know if I'd prefer Jay over E&B, no. But he is on The Blaze though I don't know how many listeners he has.

I looked quick and I thought the 2 was the number of listeners he had not the start time. LOL

So, basically, you mean just your opinion.

" Never be boring or predictable...".

Since we are talking opinions. I think they are VERY predictable. On any issue, I can with 99% certainty what their position will be.

And speaking of boring....two Liberals talking to each other about all the things they agree on with no one challenging them is pretty boring.

Oh, wait....they have Gov. Patrick on every now and then....wonder what they'll disagree with him on? Nothing!

They agree with everything he says...and let him spout without being challenged.

I will give them one good attribute...they are live and local...and they are both Bostonians (now).

Clearly, you are tuned in and listening to Jim Braude and Margery Egan everyday on WGBH-FM 89.7 from 12N- 2P. Guess it is time to clear your head before you turn on that drug addled Rush Limbaugh and that old has been Howie Carr. Time for Carr to pack it in.Talk about boor - ing and predictable. Carr's not even phoning it in anymore. Can't listen to him for more than a few minutes. Know exactly what he is going to say. Feel sorry for Nancy Shack, aka, Sandy.

So, Egan and Braude are good...because Carr and Rush are bad?

Personally (just an opinion), I think talkradio has sucked in Boston, since the days of Gene Burns, Brudnoy, Williams, etc. (....and yes Ted and Janet!)

Rush makes about $59 mil/yr --not bad for drug addled. Talent On Loan From Oxys!
Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead and Limbaugh is alive. What's wrong with this picture...Rush :"What, what,,,I can't hear you.... Oh, yeah. the Oxys killed not me -just my hearing."

I listened to Egan and Braude when I was in college and thought they were godawful. That they are still on the air all these years later is a sad sign of the state of local Boston talk radio.

Supposedly they had a good following on TKK and it was said RKO coveted them at one time for mornings. Not into them...when I mentioned they were gaining an hour (taken from Imus), my very left leaning sister said, "Jim and Margery? I LOVE them!!"
(Though pol. ideaology doesn't always follow a host...who might draw from diff. leanings if they do a good show.)

For the record, in the most recent January ratings, WBUR-FM was at #9, WGBH-FM at #15, WRKO at #17. This doesn't tell us where Braude & Egan are in their two-hour time slot. But I'd assume WGBH is pleased with the contributions they bring in at pledge time.

It is interesting that Boston has TWO NPR News-Talk stations and both rate higher than WRKO, which has the Conservative Talk Radio format all to itself now in Boston. Six Boston stations have gotten out of the Talk format in the last couple of years, WTKK, WXKS, WWZN (Progressive Talk), WILD (Black Talk), WNTN (Women's Talk) and WCAP (Lowell). Two of the top Conservative Syndicated Talk hosts in the U.S. have no home in Boston, Hannity and Beck.

I guess listeners in Boston would rather hear the two NPR Talk stations than the traditional Rush-and-his-clones Conservative Talk format.
