Jim Buchanan out at Fox 43

Word is that Jim Buchanan is suddenly out as meteorologist at Fox 43 after 18 years. "Slim" Jim was a Central PA radio guy for years, having worked at WAHT, WKBO, Q106 WQXA and The Rose.

Poor Jim. He's not young, not blonde, and doesn't act as if every word on the teleprompter is coming as a complete surprise. He's just a good, relatable weathercaster. Obviously not Fox 43 material.

It makes one wonder, with Fox 43's new "Barbie Doll" anchor, is Evan's days also numbered. There has been a great number of mature, talented and experienced people let go over the recent years. Budget, image, who knows other than Fox 43.

Dennis

And these wonks wonder why people get their news from Comedy Central. It's no better even in the big markets anymore. Unprepared, stumbling over the stories, can't pronounce words, and then there's the banter between the anchor people, when they all talk at the same time and laugh like every stupid remark is the funniest thing EVER. Most of the stations here in Philly are completely unwatchable. 6ABC reigns.

They did hire a new News Director last week ! :)

Was someone let go, again? Jim Depury (spelling) did oversee the entire news department for many years, maybe he's still there, I don't know. Or are you talking about his replacement? I've been out of the loop lately.

Jim DePury was let go at WPMT several years ago and went over to WGAL as 11pm Producer. Within the past year he accepted a News Director position at WBRE/WYOU in Scranton.

DePury's replacement ( I forget his name ) was there about three years and decided to return
home to Arizona. His replacement as of last week was David Silverstein. Silverstein has been around.
I do remember him from WMAR TV in Baltimore.
It's sad to hear about Jim Buchanan. Very capable, and perhaps the "best" dresser on local television. :'(

I feel bad for Jim, as he was obviously give a raw deal. Hopefully he'll bounce back and someone will do him a solid and give that good man some work.

REALITY CHECK.......

The problem at Fox43 is that they truly have NO business doing news, let alone 90 minutes of it at night or 4 hours of it in the morning. Their effort is piss-poor at best and anyone who works there probably is, or has been embarrassed to have an on-air segment destroyed by the production "staff". Everyone except for Evan, who everyone knows is a "star" in York and should be treated as such.

1. Constantly repeating stories just to fill time, even repeating fluff pieces months later on nights that are dead and space needs filled, hence the Made in PA series of fluff that's been recycled for several years now, especially that Turkey Hill ice cream piece and the one from Martin's Chips. In the morning you just basically see that same 60 minute newscast done 4 times in a row.

2. Teases for things that are 3 or even 4 segments away, all done in a desperate attempt just to keep people on the dial number.

3. Chyrons so badly done or misspelled, you'd swear a 3rd grader is at the helm.

4. On-air graphics not matching the stories or just plain altogether inappropriate for the type of story covered.

5. Microphones not on at the right time or cue, or worse yet, not off when they should be.

6. Video not synched up or audio not synched....or just the wrong clips played in reports.

7. Field reporters sent out to scenes hours and hours after a story breaks, while there is literally NOTHING happening there or no one even there to interview regarding the story....but they can claim they were "on the scene"......BFD....ya look like idiots, and just wasted a lot of station resources.

8. NO real investigative staff or reporting whatsoever. (They just read the Daily Record site, or any other paper that's convenient)

9. Seldom do they report news about York, acknowledge York, or York events until late in the `cast...and they BASED OUT OF YORK.

The list could go on and on and on....but that would take pages and pages, and take days to compile.

They should just try to do a solid half-hour broadcast and be happy they even got anyone to watch. they're trying so hard to give the appearance of being a regional station (like WGAL) that they've forgotten how to do news. If something like one of their typical 10PM newscasts happened at WGAL they probably clean house the next day. Heads would roll. They take news reporting SERIOUSLY. And while I think that Fox43 wants that too, they just don't have the means, or the talent, to get it done.

Sorry, but there is a saying that says the truth hurts sometimes. It does, but it should be used as a lesson, an opportunity if you will. Besides, someone has to tell `em, because they don't have anyone there with the balls to do it.....or fix it.

And on top of all of that, they are using one of their subchannels to loop the latest newcast over and over until it's time to do a new one.

There have been many many people shown the door there since I left in the mid nineties and not for their inabilities to do their jobs. I agree on the too much fluff and repetition in their news casts.

Dennis

They did have technical problems on Sunday night and Monday morning. They were using a single studio camera and passing around one microphone during the AM show on Monday !It was quite comical and certainly not professional.I don't know for certain however they may have lost either their news switcher or perhaps their audio console and were simply feeding the camera and microphone through Master control ?I lost touch with techs who had worked their, however I would be curious to know precisely what had happened. :)

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Fox 43 a TV station? :D

We're not too strict about rules around here, Tom. Local TV isn't a verboten topic. Jim is a former radio guy too, with stops at WAHT, WKBO and the Rose, among others.

Thanks. Just so I know. I don't watch TV anymore. Is there a place to discuss that?
