Jim Hummel, nice guy BAD talk radio host.

Today, Jim Hummel was talking about Michael Vick. He took the position that the NFL should have made him sit out for at least a year after getting released from jail. He lectured about it until 18 past the hour and took just one call. For God's sake Hummel (he seems to like his last name) get to it! He has horrible talk radio technique. No doubt the result of years of working with newspaper editors and TV field producers. He can NOT think and/or ad lib on the fly.

When a phone caller said, Hummel would you suggest to your radio company that they were premature in hiring Buddy Cianci after felony convictions and a jail sentence? Should Mr. Cianci have set out a year like you are suggesting for Michael Vick? (Very insightful questions I might add from the caller) Jim Hummels reply, "That's above my pay grade. I will just leave that one alone." Maybe previous posters are right here, he works for FREE. Thus, it would be above his pay grade! That's the best this guy can do?

He sure seems like a nice guy, but he is NOT ready for a full time radio gig.

Yak , I know what you mean BUT, at least Hummel let the caller say it. Ron would have dumped him and Dan would have dismissed him quickly . Hummel and Tony Cornetta are doing the subbing for free. Well, Tony C is on salary. Look at it this way, the Subs make the Full timers look good.

If you're going to be talk radio host you need BALLS! Hummel should have said, "You damn right, if Citadel Broadcasting had asked me (and they didn't) I would have suggested Buddy sit out a year! Now, with that said, I invite you to lsiten to him each day at 10!" THAT'S how you handle it. This Hummel guy, sans teleprompter, says "above my paygrade". LAME, he's very lame. Nice guy, lame.

This is why they would never hire me. I would just speak my mind and their heads would spin. They would probably want to kill me by the end my shift. But it would be great radio and people WOULD listen!

John, if I were your PD we'd spend a lot of time behind closed doors yelling at each other.

Probably. Then I would encourage you to call me on air to yell at me there. It would make for good radio. :)

As Rodney might say, bug-eyed, and yanking his necktie: "Tough room!"

Radio-outsiders-filling-in don't always touch-all-the-bases of the aesthetic WE, who are of-the-craft of radio, conform to.
But there are trade-offs.
"Having a face," pre-existing equity with the audience, as Jim Hummel and Hizzoner bring, goes on-the-plus-side of the equation.
For-what-such-polls-are-worth, Buddy-being-voted RI's #1 Talk Host, right-out-of-the-box, is evidence.
LISTENERS KNOW THESE CHARACTERS, notwithstanding some rough edges they might have, in terms of the craft.

Subjectively, Hummel sounds darn engaging...affable.
Over the years, he's taken a lot of heat for being-an-attack-dog.
Now, he's getting a hard time for NOT.

Didn't Hummel leave Channel 6, because they hired Buddy in the first place?

Harmony-with-the-others-there doesn't seem to be among criteria for admission to the once-convivial WPRO studio these days.
As other posts have suggested, that can actually have value.
Sparks, theater. "BALLS," to use a industry expression someone else here offered.

You click onto it, you listen to it.

That video made me laugh so much. Out of all the jobs I've had during my entire life I've only been fired from one. That was a crappy telemarketing job at American Frozen Foods where I had to set up appointments for people to buy bulk meat and the freezer to go along with it. Nobody wanted any of it. So that was the only time I've heard YOU"RE FIRED! lol. All my broadcasting jobs I left on my own. Maybe one day a radio or TV station will fire me. But I haven't been that lucky up to this point. It's to bad in a way. I hear about all these broadcasters who have fired 10 and 11 times. People like Sally Jesse Rapheal who might hold some kind of record for being fired the most. But here I sit feeling left out. Is there a radio station out there who can just please hire me for like a week? Then fire me by the weekend. I would really like that. Thanks
