Jim Ladd Out at KLOS

Jim Ladd is out after many years at KLOS.

Will 100.3 soon be added to Mr. Ladd's L.A. radio credits?

Either that or working for Sky for free.

The Sound would be crazy not to pick him up. If they gave more freedom to Rita at night and brought Jim in with his show intact to follow hers, (obligatory Doors every hour included!) they could craft a free-form personality that they could market  and position yet still stick to the tried and true radio formatics during the day which would keep them from losing too much cume. Best of both worlds!

KLOS has been dying a slow death for some time and this is the equivalent of taking the patient off of life support. It took some time, but as I mentioned last month, the Sound has rather steadily been taking the audience away, even if it may be in the older demos. I wouldn't be surprised if KLOS under new Cumulus management first try to go nearly all auto with the exception of Mark and Brian. M&B is probably the only thing keeping the station from being blown up.

For those who like to engage David E. in the "researched and small playlist vs. good, interesting radio" debate (I won't get into it, but a few of the  unsuspecting here still try from time-to-time) KLOS is your Exhibit A. They literally lost dominant market position in a three-way race against two rivals that have more varied playlists, particularly over the last two years. The beginning of the decline can be traced to soon after Buchman's arrival, when he ditched most everything recorded before the late 70's that wasn't an absolute rock staple (like "Freebird"). By narrowing the playlist so much, the station became repetitive and tired. They further sold their soul when they banished Ladd to Sunday - Thursday (What was up with that?)

Interesting side story: Ladd let go from KLOS just before the weekend Tom Petty puts on two huge (if numerically small) shows produced by buddy Sky for his tiny station KCSN that is as close to free-form as this town gets, where Tom is sure to play the hit "The Last DJ" inspired by their fellow music traveler, DJ Jim Ladd among others. Will a now-free Jim be there? Bet on it.

I reached out to Jim today. Sad day. He truly is a 'keeper of the flame'. Spoke to him on the drive home from the station.
Tom and I both want him to come to our show this weekend and allow us to acknowledge his dedication to L.A. radio.

I'll miss Jim.listening to his show and Interviews are very entertaining and informative too.He did a four hour interview with my favorite singer Stevie Nicks last August.I was glued to my computer to about 5am in the morning listening to the webstream about almost 3,000 miles from LA.He;'s great I will miss him.and I'll wish him luck.

For once we agree ChannelFlipper. I have been trying to say just what you said tonight about the demise of KLOS over the last few years. It was a true shame, and I will say it again, because it was once such a great station. They should have never gotten rid of Rita Wilde, and no again, I am not the pr person for the sound! Hopefully The Sound will scoop Ladd up, he is an LA ICON and has many more years of good radio in him. And Buchmann should have never pushed him to Sunday night. And, I do think you are right, they will go to voice track, except for M&B. Thier jocks were hardly talking at all in the last month or so.

Rita had a very touching spoken tribute to Jim Ladd and radio in general tonight at 11:00 on the Sound, and then substituted the album side she was originally going to play with "Radio K.A.O.S" by Roger Waters, which of course features Jim Ladd quite prominently. Very fitting tribute and a class act by both Rita and the Sound.

Somewhat fittingly, it was just before she played "Freebird" at about 10:50 that she made some oblique comments referencing Jim as well, obviously preferencing her speech at the top of the hour. It was indeed quite the fitting reference to Jim because when it come to Jim Ladd, it is absolutely true that this bird you will never change.

Jim Ladd is a radio legend in this town and should be viewed as such. Of course his time on the air is not over yet, just his dial position will be changing. Stay tuned.

A SAD DAY IN L.A. RADIO... :'( I Love Jim with all my Heart and I'm Disgusted At The Layoffs This Merger Is Causing. Jim, Hope To Hear You Again On The Radio Soon. Joe G

Eerily reminiscent of the downfall of KMET.

Sounds (no pun intended) like Rita was secretly lobbying for her old colleague to join her at 100.3 with the "Radio KAOS" thing...
