Jim Mantel out at WGAR!

Probably nothing to do with ratings. Expense + age = elimination. They'll bring in someone for half the cost, or less.

And they will act like this 20-year vet never existed at their radio station.

What a rotten business.

Ratings may or may not have played a factor. Remember, PPMs are generally not friendly to high profile morning stars that talk more than play music. Ask Chicago's Steve Dahl, as just one example...

Note that I haven't really heard much of Jim's show, but I suspect there was more music than a typical morning drive FM show.

The money probably played a big role. You don't get a top-rated morning show for cheap, and Jim's been there more than long enough to get a decent sized contract.

Sorry to see him go...but unfortunately in radio in 2010, not surprised.

Oh, sure, the PPM effects on morning drive talk shows on music stations are still being studied. Not all the shows are getting killed like Dahl did.

It doesn't matter all that much, since Lanigan won't be on for that much longer. (Watch him fool us all, and stay on the air past Dick Goddard's age, despite the regular retirement talk!)

I really can't believe the relatively anemic response to a guy losing his 18-year gig. Do so few people really care about Cleveland radio anymore? Or are radio types so jaded and me-first that they don't care?

I don't know that people don't care exactly..Just that the terminating of a long time employee (especially by Clear Channel) is not exactly a new thing here..Been happening all over..With all the big radio groups

Speaking of "retirement" talk. Rizzo made a comment the other day that his burning the wick at both ends after more than three years is wearing on him and his family. Could he possibly exit WKNR in the next year or so?

Loved Jim Mantel on WGAR when I was growing up in the Cleveland area. It is a shame to hear about him being cut but hopefully he will move on to bigger and better things.

Who knows? I'd find it very hard to believe that he would leave television to work on radio full-time again. But having both jobs has to be greuling on him, on a five-day-a-week pattern no less. Had the radio show still started at 10AM and went for only two hours, it might be easier.

Personally, WKNR needs Rizz far more than Fox 8. He leaves radio, the station would have a black hole in their schedule. It is their centerpiece program, and the one most people bother to talk about every single day.
