Jim Nesbitt Dead at 75

Jim Nesbitt a native of Bishopville, SC pasted away on Thursday Nov, 29 at his home in Florence, SC. He had been a DJ in South Carolina in the mid to eaely fifties then moving on to DJ in Washington, DC in the late fifties. He gained national attention in 1961 thru 1970 with a string of country comic songs with one reaching the top ten (Looking For More In 64), other that made Bill Boards top twenty were (Please Mr Kennedy, Mother In Law, Runnin Bare, Tiger In My Tank, and Please Mr Custer). He would have been 76 years old on Dec. first. I have enjoyed watching Jim on the Ralph Emm show and on the Grand Old Oppry.

Of course, Nesbitt was a major personality on Big TV 13 in Florence for many years, more or less setting the tone for the WBTW as a station for country people.

Jim was known as the "Ol 'Lasses Sopper" (old molasses sopper) on WAGS/Bishopville. Slim Williamson, then owner of WPEH/Louisville, Ga, recorded Jim's "Lookin' For More In '64", which led to Williamson's buying Chart Records in Nashville. Of course, Slim and Chart Records went on to help start the recording careers of Lynn Anderson and Billy "Crash" Craddock.

My favorite Jim Nesbitt song was "Shaving Cream". Reminds me of the radio business!
