Jim Rome heading to....CBS?

From @jimrome moments ago:

'I want to thank ESPN for the opportunity to host JRIB & all the support I received over the years. I'm looking forward to future endeavors.'

Now, let's connect a few dots.

Rumors have been swirling for a while that Rome has been in discussions w/ CBS about a gig. I would assume it was CBS Radio, since a Jim Rome TV show on CBS TV would be a little odd...

So, if the deal is with CBS Radio, and Rome is now exclusive to CBS Radio (taking a leap)....might they 'force' him onto all their local sports talkers?

Just an outline for discussion. I'm taking a few liberties with this outline, the only thing that's confirmed so far is that Rome is leaving ESPN.

Romey's TV show and radio show were mutually exclusive.

Premiere Radio Networks (an arm of CC) still handles the radio show. Which, oddly enough, was dropped by CBS' KILT/610 Houston last week in favor of more local programming.

Now, the real question is, does Rome still want to leave WKNR after they moved his first hour to KNR2 took his first hour off the air last January? The current MO for 92.3 (for now, at least) is live/local all day long.

IMO, Rome should have went to the NBCSN and simulcast his radio show ala Dan Patrick.

CBS Sports Network is trying to establish itself as legitimate compitition to the behemoth in Bristol and NBCSN (the former Versus).

With CBS, Romey can be the man, the face of the network. At the 4-letter network, he was merely a spoke on the wheel.

Remember, they bumped "Jim Rome is Burning" down to ESPN2, so as to expand NFL Live to 1 full hour. So that shoulda told you right there that Mr. Rome's tenure at ESPN wasn't as strong as it once was.

Yeah, I just wonder if this isn't the start of CBS essentially making Rome the face of the Empire. This deal is for TV....Could the next one be for radio? It would make sense, CBS hasn't had that radio mega-star since Howard pulled up shop and went to Sirius.

I don't know, it's fun to talk about I guess. Looks like we can squash the Rome to 92.3 rumor for a while...unless like Nathan mentioned, Rome is looking for another local affiliate.

If CBS were to look for their next big star, it'd be an AMD host for their FMs, not a midday sports guy.

Yeah, I guess I should have been clearer and specified the 'Sports' Empire. Rome will never be Howard Stern. There are, however, a lot of 'The Fan' FM talkers out there..a guy like Rome could do wonders for them. Eh, I'm kinda talking myself out of it being a good idea as I go, lol.

CBS' "Fan" stations like going live and local from pretty much 6a-midnight (at the oasis). The only time they'd do syndicated stuff is overnights.

So Rome to CBS Radio is a no-go all the way around.

+1
As far as Rome's TV exposure, he has a history of going to smaller networks. He was one of the cornerstone pieces to ESPN2 back in the mid-90s. He could do the same to CBS Sports Network. But I don't expect 92.3 to pick up Rome if KNR drops him. His only chance of staying in Cleveland is if he is picked up by WMMS.

Would be an improvement over Baskin/Phelps, that's for sure. Local isn't always better.

I'm also in the "Romey isn't going to the Fan" camp.

Remember, he's been on ESPN(2) for years now, and hasn't done a thing for ESPN Radio. His radio side is not tied to his TV side...his radio status solely has to do with his Premiere deal.

If he leaves Premiere for CBS Radio, that'd be a brand new deal that would have to set up syndication within CBS. I don't see it happening, and CBS seems to take special efforts to set up their "Fan" sports talkers as local entities full-time.

KILT in Houston was an exception.

As part of the deal, Rome gets a 1/2 hour daily show ("Rome") on CBSSN, a weekly (I do believe) show on Showtime, and will be a contibutor on CBS for the NFL (CBS has next year's Super Bowl), March Madness, and U.S. Open tennis.

So this is even bigger than we thought, as Romey's gonna get himself a lot of face time on big CBS, as well as the affiliated cable nets.

I might be in the minority but I just find Rome's style incredibly uninspiring. He speaks in cliches, his callers ramble on for minutes and basically repeat ad nauseum what Rome just said. Whenever Rome has interviews he brags about them for the rest of the show. I hope 92.3 never puts him on their station, I would rather listen to Baskin/Phelps (who have their own issues).
