Jim Rome Takes His TV Show Off ESPN

Wow, you believe Rome "took his show off" ESPN to go to a network that very few people even know exists? Did the fact that Rome is Burning was dumped to ESPN 2 from the mothership this month give you any clue that the show isn't worth what they are paying for it and Rome is a heavily scripted act who could never do play-by-play or any thing of significance other than rehash his tired radio show on TV?
I love how many of his "clones" still believe Rome is some important player in sports talk. When was the last time he broke a story or did something anyone talks about? He is still not on in many of the biggest markets: i.e...New York, Chicago, Philly and who knows how many other big cities - and has lost Houston and many other medium markets the last few years.
Dan Patrick was smart enough to allow DirecTV to put his show on TV so major markets everywhere can see the show because DP, as well, isn't on in NY, Chicago, Philly and many other top 10 markets on radio. Rome obviously doesn't want anyone to see him reading scripts in a studio or he would have allowed his radio gig to be seen in big cities as many other radio shows now airing on cable systems all accross the US. Rome is a legend who has made a lot of money, but he was lucky to have Clear Channel pimping him and keeping him on in a harmless, non-drive-time daypart for a long, long time.

Just more time for "Tebow Talk" and "Why Does Tony Romo Suck?" and "Pontificate Incessantly About The Minutiae Of Any Team Within The Eastern Corridor" for the four letter network.

In other words, business as usual.

ESPN is dreck with or without Pimp In The Box.

In the aftermath of all this Rome/CBS Sports news, these tweets were sent out by James Andrew Miller, the guy who co-wrote the ESPN tell-all "Those Guys Have All the Fun":

ESPNBook James Andrew Miller
"Btw, Jim Rome does TV mostly for exposure. Yearly income from the radio show alone is around $30 million."

ESPNBook James Andrew Miller
"Just passing on.Rome 30 # was double sourced, but someone close to him just called to say 'You're out of your mind, it's only $25 million.'"

@RadioGodzilla: Last I checked, Houston was still a top-ten market alongside New York, Chicago and Philadelphia - and not so much a "medium" market. I suppose what Rome lacks for radio presence in these markets, he makes up for with television. As the previous poster suggests - "mostly for exposure."

Exposure? You all forget Rome's big on-air scam to scare his bosses before he took the ESPN tv gig when he announced he was going to give up either radio or TV and wouldn't do both to " spend more time with his family" after bombing on Fox Sports Net. He got a fat new radio deal and then a few months later, signs to do Rome is Burning. He reportedly got 1-mil a year from ESPN to basically re-read his scripted "takes" from a teleprompter and it was just filler programming in the afternoon. When they realized PTI and Around the Horn were getting 10x the ratings, they unloaded the show to ESPN 2 before the dreadful Dan Lebetard mess. Rome realized his wasn't going to get more money after the demotion and brilliantly spun it into a new "better" gig at CBS Sports network - seen by thousands.
As for his reported 25-million a year income. Listen to the commercials on his show. The entire Premiere radio network from Dan Patrick to the rest of the brutal shows doesn't BILL 25-mil a year. Amazing how much Rome's PR spin doctors can try to keep him relevant. Check his ratings in strongholds like LA. It's a dying schtick which never gets better.

Thanks, radiogodzilla. I was flabbergasted by those alleged salary numbers and was hoping someone would debunk them. And you're right, Rome's schtick is tired and irrelevant.

I'm sure Zilla knows what Rome earns? Do some of you clowns get together in a basement and bash guys who are more successful than all of your familes combined? Zilla shoud apply for the job of cleaning the stalls in Van Smack's stables at Del Mar. Zilla can feed Rome's winning horses and wash them down after they win!

I don't care what Rome or any of these hacks make, I just am not gullible like the "lifeguard" who I'm sure knows what Romey makes. Since you know so much and are a shill for spin, maybe Romey can hire you to keep cleaning up the horse doo-doo because you believe anything shoveled your way. ;D

Thank you all for the all the informative and enlightening posts on this topic. I had listened to Jim Rome for the past 14 years, but now after reading all of this, I now realize that it was all a waste of time. Rome's show is old and tired and so it his "on air" persona. It seems that most of his audience are those adult juveniles with middle school locker room mentalities who never grew up. Rome's show was fun at first in 1998, but now its 2012 and it all sounds the same, routine, only the dates and names have changed. If Rome hadn't had that relative in radio who originally gave him that break a long time ago (among other factors), he would have ended up as one of those annoying repeat daily callers barfing into the static, because he's not that good. I've never seen his TV show and didn't even know it had switched to ESPN and I won't miss it.

So wait, it's only now you have an epiphany about enjoying a sports personality after 14 years of listening to him?

You'll excuse me if one think you're simply joining the loud peanut gallery of this thread.

Dude, that's me and there are a lot of us out there with lots of disposable income... Rome ain't goin' nowhere, but his TV Shows suck

Rome needs to stick to the radio. I don't enjoy him as much on tv.

Yeah, you can sign on to CBS Sports Network for 7 dollars more a month with Time Warner and you will get FUEL, The Tennis Channel, The Big 10 Network, and the Sportsman Network. No one will see Rome's new show.
