Jim Rome to CBS Radio

This is huge:

Jim Rome is moving his show from Premiere Radio Networks to CBS Sports Radio starting 1/4/13.

Here's the story:

http://www.deadline.com/2012/08/jim-rome-to-leave-premiere-radio-networks-for-deal-with-cbs-sports-radio/

Now this has major ramifications for Cleveland radio.

This all but ensures Rome is out at WKNR/WWGK.

Logically, his slots will probably filled with expanding local shows like RBS and The Hooligans on 850, and bringing back Colin Cowherd's last hour on 1540.

Now here's the biggie...what about charter CBS Sports Radio affiliate WKRK 92.3 The Fan?

Do they shoehorn Romey on their schedule (assuming it's his usual noon-3 slot), do the delay him until after hours, or do they stay true to their live and local motif and just not air him and have Cleveland be "jungle"-less since 1998?

If Rome stays in his usual slot, and 92.3 runs him, the schedule could look like this:

5-9a -- Kiley and Booms
9a-12p -- Baskin and Phelps
12-3p -- Jim Rome
3-7p -- Bull and Fox
7p-12a -- Ken Carmen
12-5a -- Fabulous Sports Babe (confirmed she'll be the overnight host on CBS Sports Radio)

We'll see...

That sounds like a good scheduling move without having to dump an existing show. That's if The Fan wants to go from all-local between 6AM and Midnight on weekdays/weeknights to having a syndicated show in between certain shows.

Then again, Jim Rome can be a huge boost for the station and can help put a dent in WKNR, which would likely go with ESPN programming or giving their local shows (i.e. TRBS) an extra hour or two to fill the potential void of Rome.

I don't know...Rome has always done well in Cleveland, and this would be a chance to really stick it to KNR.

And quite honestly, shaving an hour from Talking Heads and Bull and Fox might make those shows better, as both shows would have to have a little faster pace to them.

Bull and Fox are on too long-I'm not a Rome fan, but it would probably be a good pick up for 92.3-I would like to hear more of the Hooligans.

Im all for sticking it to WKNR, I cant stand how those guys have run that station. But, having said that, I prefer the all local angle that 92.3 has. I used to be a big Rome fan, but now Id rather hear local stuff.

While I certainly respect the success Jim Rome has had in his career...I've never liked his use of language and street-talk style.

It's so fake/phony. I'm mean...how many people do most of you come across in your everyday lives who talk that way in typical conversations?

I realize what he's done works....it's just not for me.

I'm more of a straight-ahead, down-to-earth, local content sportstalk station. Sure hope 923TheFan do not pick up Rome. But, they probably will.

I'll just turn off sportstalk for 3 hours a day....like I have since I first heard Jim Rome.

Rome has been dropped around the country, partially b/c of the CBS model of going local (see Houston). Truth is, Rome has not done well at all in the ratings in the past three years (I hear he's actually getting a third of the listeners that Baskin and Phelps are getting).

Rome used to do REALLY well when he first came to Cleveland, but the act has gotten stale and his show really hasn't evolved.

The all local model will be put to the test now that Rome is gonna be under the CBS banner.

I honestly think that due to his Cleveland following, the odds of Rome coming to the Fan are 70-30.

Rome's show is virtually the same show it was 10 years ago. Stupid cliches, "Thanks for the vine Jim" and then a 2 minute rant about whatever topic Rome was topic about virtually identical to what Rome said. Great call "rack him". Then after Rome does an interview he repeats it ad nauseum what a great interview it was for the remainder of the show. At the end of the show it is the huge call of the day followed by emails that he can "block". This is all stuff he did 10 years ago and is still doing now. 92.3 is better off with Baskin and Phelps who I must admit have improved a lot over the past year and I would hate to see them bumped for national sports talk which is not embraced in this market. People want to talk their local teams not hear how the Houston Texans are doing.

Well, if 923TheFan adds the Jim Rome show noon-3pm....my radio will go to WKNR (who'll probably stick with local), or I'll listen to music on my MP3. And, I really don't like TRBS...but, at least it's local.

My biggest wish is CBS would move 923TheFan to 98.5 so I can actually hear it without having to be in my car or stream online.

But, since 923TheFan has yet to build significant ratings, the move to 98.5 is probably on hold TFN. Sadly.

No need to bring rome back. It really is a silly show, and the current programs are fine. I enjoy their programming and have not returned to KNR. Hopefully, I will not have to return to KNR because of the nonsense provided by Rome.

As a CBS O/O, I would doubt 92.3 will pick up Rome, at least if the Pittsburgh model is any indication. KDKA-FM picked up a CBS Sports Radio commentary but otherwise is sticking to what now is a 20.6-hour-a-day live slate. (They run "best of" material from 2-5:40 a.m.)

However, can CBS bump material to any other Cleveland station, the way KDKA-FM fare is turning up on KDKA-AM these days? AM 1020 has had Pirate baseball (including a Labor Day simulcast with the FM), NFL Football from Dial Global (the opener Wednesday night conflicted with a Pirates game so FM took the more important-to-Pittsburgh broadcast) and high school football (again because of Pirate and I think perhaps Pitt conflicts on FM).

Yes, I know, I can ... and do ... post on the Pittsburgh site. But it's been a while since I checked out Cleveland. Interesting stuff right now. And, really, to Art Modell, requiescat in pacem.
