Jim Rome vs. David Stern

The little spat the two of them had on this mornings Jim Rome Show was pretty entertaining. I think the question "Was the NBA lottery fixed" is almost silly to ask because we already know what the answer is going to be. But Stern's response was totally embarrasing, especially when he asked Rome if he "stopped beating his wife". Rhetorical or not, that was very out of line and completely unprofessional. Then at the end when he told Rome he had a more important call to make to Steven A. Smith, that's simply a comment one would expect from a spoiled child.

Sure, Rome probably would have been better off not asking a question that had an obvious answer, though questions like that are always asked by the reporters. But Stern deals with the media daily and it's his job to deal with all questions whether they're good ones or not - it's the nature of his role. Rome gets a 'C' for the question, but Stern gets an 'F-' for handling that whole thing like a spoiled, immature child instead of the commissioner of the NBA.

Rome's question was no more silly than Bob Costa asking Jerry Sandusky if he was attracted to young boys, and both answers were equally newsworthy. It was a fair interview.
