Jim Stagg Dies

Sad to hear of this news. And surprising that there has been minimal attention about this so far. I think this deserves more than 1 sentence in Feder's column and the channel 5 report with Bob Sirott.

I remember "The Stagg Line" and "British Countdown" and all the rest as Jim was one of the very first to join Super CFL when it turned "top 40" in 1965.

It also shocked me a bit when I learned last night that Stagg owned "Record City", as I used to shop there regularly when it was open in the 70's, and I had no idea who owned it. So Jimmy P. Stagg was a part of those 2 very special decades. I'll miss him.

Terri Hemmert plans a tribute on her Breakfast with the Beatles show on Sunday, November 18 on WXRT.

After talking with the family at Jim's funeral, Terri Hemmert has postponed her tribute to Jim Stagg for a couple of weeks. She and the family will be going through tapes looking for appropriate air checks to include. Terri said the family is very appreciative of all the people who remember Jim from his radio days.

It is a shame that most of the great 1967 WCFL jocks have now passed on including: Jim Runyon, Joel Sebastian, Jim Stagg and Barney Pip.

Bob Sirrott may have made an error here. He says that Jim Stagg was the narrator for the Chicken Man series. I always thought that was Jim Runyan who did that. Perhaps I am wrong.

Old Chicago

WELLLLLL! You are correct. Jim Runyan narrated Chickenman. I wrote a correction on the NBC5 web site but haven't checked to see if they posted it.

Very sad to hear this. I knew Jim in his CFL days and spent some time with him in and out of the station. What a decent guy! It was from him that I learned of the workings of top 40 radio during that period of time. I then made a career move to Atlanta, but from that distance could only keep up with his moves to NBC and eventually to his own record store. Most of this information came from a former Atlanta radio personality. I understood that he had a son going to the same college he went to in Alabama.

For any of those who had an opportunity to know Jim, I am sure his passing represents a valued relationship lost.

How did I miss this back in November... RIP to an influence to many who knew him not, but knew of him and listened to him.. He was an early favorite for me, as I worked my way into the ions of radio broadcasting...
Thank JPS.... From a guy who listened from 300 miles away..... :'(

Does anyone recall Jim's sign-off?

"Music is my business. I hope my business was your pleasure"

Indeed, Jim. Indeed.

Terri Hemmert has scheduled her tribute to Jim Stagg. It'll be part of her annual "Rampant Beatlemania" marathon this Sunday, February 10, from 8am to 7pm on WXRT (93.1) Stagg's family gave her access to Jim's archives, so airchecks, including his interviews with the Beatles, will be part of the festivities. Hearing those interviews was a major reason why Hemmert chose a career in radio.
