Legendary Iowa sportscaster Jim Zabel passed away at his Scottsdale, AZ home on May 23 at age 91. He was hired by WHO Radio in Des Moines in 1944 and became sports director in 1950. He did play by play for Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball on WHO for 49 seasons and was known for his entertaining, at times over the top announcing style. He also served as the primary sports anchor on WHO-TV for 30 years. Although Zabel was technically retired, he maintained a presence with WHO until the day he died.
